My experience with Corey at Clayton Racing has been a very negative one. Reading this thread, I know a lot of you know Corey personally and hold him to be an upstanding man. However, this has not been my experience.
In early November of last year, I sent Corey a deposit to start on a DIY 383 LT1 Shortblock. When I sent him the money, he told me I would have the block by January of this year at the absolute latest.
I still have no block. He charged me the other half of the deposit in March, with a "Shipping" charge coming in April. However, after several outright lies regarding the block having "shipped", I finally asked for a refund last month.
After receiving and cashing Corey's check, it bounced today. I am going to seek out Corey directly to make this right, but I am also seeking that anyone who knows him here would also help me by contacting Corey. This type of behavior is nothing short of theft, I do not know how Corey ended up with his good name acting this way.
I appreciate any assistance any of you can provide.
Thank you,
jahajazz

You know I have heard of this before with others and a lot of negative reports.
On the other hand he is all around a great guy that gets **** done.
But I have no clue how a year can go by and still no block and then sends your cash back for it to then bounce.

Im with ramair! Find someone local who builds engines for a local race series. Ask around who has a good rep. Here in Fla we have alot of good builders with all of the drag, circle and marine racing. Then when you want you can drive over and have a peek at the progress.

Time out. Our credit card processor had money tied up so it wasn't cleared in the account the day that check got ran, and they did not try to run it a second time. The money is there. To call me a thief is completely BULLSHIT and un-deserved.

It may not have bounced intentionally but that still does not explain why he never got the block and the deception about shipping the block.

there is a lot of things that have been happening around here lately. We for over a year have been overwhelmed with work and finally stopped taking in any new work a few months ago (which I should have done a lot sooner). We took down the webstore and stopped all advertising to try and get caught up and back to sqaure one. I've got no excuses, I took in too much work. My fault.

Thats a good problem to have "too much work" but please let the customer know how backed up you are before you take the deposit. If you are like most machine shops, they will favor the local bread and butter customers and set aside the one-off out of towners to the back of the line. The dirt track guys or hard core drag racers that spend the big bucks year round always get pushed to the front of the line at most shops every time which delays the others for months.
You seemed to be having a good thing going there. Im sure you will get things right.

I really don't know anything about this vendor BUT in my years on forums I have come to see reputation and reality are often quite different things. Many vendors get very good at covering up problems with freebies or by their other customers attacking those who dare go public.
Another thing I have seen happen many times is a vendor opens they manage to somehow buy a good reputation before they have really even accomplished anything and then they get so slammed with orders that they can never get it all done or done RIGHT IF and it is a HUGE if they ever had done anything right in the first place.
Far as finding a local place, from what I have seen around here I would rather get an engine from someone with a good proven track record. The engine shops around here, even the ones that cater to racers can't seem to do much right, though maybe that is just because they put no effort into street stuff.
If I had the coin for a built engine I think I would travel about 900miles each way to pick it up.

you guys have a lot more patience than me. i would have pulled my stuff out of any shop if it took long than a few weeks. i look at it this way. if they don't care enough to get it done in a reasonable amount of time i have to call it to question the quality of work they are performing.

I'm not understanding what could possibly take that long
The outright lies about shipping are rediculous! This is DEFINITELY NOT a unique situation, plenty of other reading material about Clayton Racing just a google search away... interesting thread on Speedtalk recently comes to mind.
