Default cc503!

Hey guys, I have a 97 z28 with just over 110k on it. It was my dd until i moved so now its only driven about one or two weekends a month. It's got a CAI, edelbrock headers and throttle body, deleted cats with flowmaster muffler 2800 vig stall, 3.73 gears, and strange s/t rear axles. I think it's finally time for a cam. I want to install a cc503 and get the stock heads ported and polished. I've read about what valve train components are necessary and which stock ones I can still use. If I go with the cam and head work plus 1.6 rr's, and new springs and valves how much hp gain do you guys think I should see? Also if you have any opinions about any other components that I should get to go along with the cam, you're welcome to share! Thanks! -Kyle

I did 503 just recently with...ewp, .026 headgaskets which i hope put me to 11to1,1.6 rr,home ported heads, mac mid length, pac springs. Waiting on 36lb injectors this week and a pcmforless tune. Hoping to get 380 at the wheels.

Oh and the tune, I'm planning on using pcmforless also. My camaro is 6 hours away in my hometown so I plan on tearing it down the next weekend I'm back, there is a good machine shop here in odessa that does a lot of work for drag cars. Let me know what your final numbers are! I don't know what hp my car is at now I'm guessing around 315-325 MAYBE.

A slightly smaller cam (.505 220) installed in my Vette was worth 30 plus horse without heads or port job. I'd say 50+ with port work and 1.6 RR.

Without getting the head work, how much do y'all think that would restrict the 503? I mean I've got time and in no big rush to get it done. I'm sure I could tear it down within a weekend and rebuild it in another (my dad owns an automotive shop so tools and working conditions wouldn't be an issue) I just figure since I'm in there might as well have them worked

The 503 does not require ported heads - it'll respond great on stock heads. And unless you have a decent size budget it's not worth doing anything to them on a small scale.

If you just want 12's hot cam It my concern with the 503 is spinning the stock motor to the rpm rang to make full use of it pluss you not wanting port heads seem like the hot cam might be a better option for you

Turtle93, I'm pretty dead set on the 503. I have a pretty good budget (I'm oilfield trash) haha but I just don't want to sacrifice a notable amount of power and then end up getting the heads done later on when I could do them now

I went with the 503 because of research on this site. And i saw alot of people do the Hotcam and then they felt like they just wanted a little more. And now having the 503 the tourqe of this cam is excellent throughout the range, very impressed with it. Just my .02

CC503 is one of the absolute best street cams out there. About as big as you can go and still pass inspection. It makes power to about 6k which is plenty safe on the stock bottom end. It's just a great cam if you're looking for good power and torque but don't want an elephant cam.

Thanks for yalls input guys. I know it's a great cam with power all throughout the rpm range, I've read a lot of threads on here and watched a lot of youtube videos of them. There's no question about which cam I want, I'm definitely going with the 503. I'm just wondering of the estimated hp I'll be adding and what valve train components I'll need. Keep in mind I only drive my car on weekends when I go back home which is once, maybe twice a month. With that being said and the car having only 110k miles do y'all think rocker arms and springs are the only thing I'll need to go along with it? What about seats, retainers, the timing chain stuff etc?

When you buy the springs, try to find some that already include the retainers, locks, bases, and seals. Kinda like Patriot extreme 8501-bsbc.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have the 503 in my car with shorty headers, CAI, ported TB, running a cat, I made 313 to the tire. I would guess he'll be lucky with 330-340 making it to the tire.

Let's try to stay on topic guys, im needing to know what valve train components are necessary and which stock ones I can get by with. I definitely don't want to cut any corners though.

313 is very low, I get 309 from the stock cam. 360 cam only is more on par.
