Default 6qts of oil and still not full?

Hey guys,
A buddy of mine just bought a 95 trans am. supposedly it has an lt4 bottom end and some other junk. Well anyways he was changing the oil, and added the 5qts we normally add. Well it was barely on the dip stick so we slowly added another quart. It still reads at the add line. Whats going on here? The oil pan looks like a regular oil pan (besides the fact that its painted red) but could it be a high capacity oil pan? Theres maybe some VERY small leaks around the engine, but nothing major. Well anyways we started it up with the 6qts or oil and it idles fine but the low oil light was on. Could the sensor be dead AND the dip stick be too short? idk whats up

The dipstick is 22 3/4" is that the same size as stock? The dip stick tube was all the way in and the filter was just a standard fram filter
