383 LT1 or LS motor
383 LT1 or LS motor Okay guys need some thoughts here. I am wanting to build a 383 stroker motor in my 96 camaro. After doing the math and looking for parts I was wondering if it would be better to switch the car over to a LS series motor. It seems they have made the swap a lot easier in the past few years. My car is a bone stock LT with a six speed. I do have an extra LT1 block that is a 4 bolt. It just seems hard to find the part I want for the lt, and there is a flood of LS parts with some great prices!
For the reasons you described I'd put the LS1 in it. If you had a car that was already Heads & Cam or a cam only full bolt on car, then I would say maybe build a 383. But starting from scratch I'd just do the LS1 swap. There really isn't a huge parts cost difference any more, the swaps been done a million times, more parts for the LS1 and power for dollar the LS1 is going to make it a lot easier then the LT1 will. That's not saying the LT1 can't make power because when ever we have one down here set up right, it always surprises people how well an LT1 car can still move.

What are your goals minus, "finding parts easily?"
I have this delusional thought where I wish I threw an LS3 in there because it would be easier. But then I bring myself back into reality and no matter what either option would have been equally difficult and cost some $$$.

If you live In a state with emissions/tough inspection laws you might want to do a little home work before you do a swap. Some states don't allow you to swap engines and some states don't allow you to swap an engine that was not a factory option.
I have had the LS1 with heads and cam. It was nice. But I now this sounds crazy but I always had a soft spot for the LT1 camaros. My red 95 camaro was the only car I ever owned that I was really upset about seeing it drive off. Now I have got another LT1 camaro that is white and with a six speed and no t-tops. I really want to do a 383 lt motor, but wanted other input for y'all. My goal is for 450+ hp. I know I need to build the six speed and change the rearend. As for the parts go, I want to do the LE3 heads and cam, and let them do the intake. I thought about a 355 but would rather go 383. Only problem is there is no one around me to tune the car that I know of. I have heard of a guy in tulsa Oklahoma. But really don't want to haul the car that far. And for some reason I can't find very many parts on the parts forum on here. It keeps pulling up all the parts. And Arkansas has no emissions regulations.

Just seems for the money, I would be better off going 383. And later on down the road when I am bored with the motor, Ill go big cubes LS! Thanks for all the input.

If you're just looking for a fun unique car a 383 LT1 is great fun. If you're looking for the most potential in a modern motor out there and the ability to be able to go faster than anyone around you then LS is the way to go. I enjoy my LT1, but I've never wanted it to be a record breaker.
After doing a couple LT1 builds i went to a LSx swap and would never look back, im in my swap for around 5k and will have a forged 348 with close to have 400whp and a LS7 clutch setup, i would never look back with the reliability and ease of finding parts.

Problem with the LS swap, I know myself and I am going to go big. I've already done heads and cam, all the bolt ons etc to my 02 trans am. I have made my mind up and going 383 for now, and after the car is done I'll start collecting parts for my LSX build. And I think I will get 450+ out of my 383, if I build it right. Then spray it with a little juice! Juice will be for those damn cobras picking on my little LT1!
