So the 8.8 Build begins!
Well, I am sure a lot of you have seen my post about my torque arm twisting...it ended up doing damage to the rear end as well! I already had most of the parts for my new custom 8.8 build sitting at the shop waiting for me to get motivated to start tearing into them lol, WELL, here it is! This is what I have so far with prices!
Complete Ford 8.8" Rear End from a 92 Cobra - $50.00 (bent axle tube)
31-Spline Posi-Trac Carrier from a Ford Explorer - $50.00
Ford Motorsports 4.10 Gears - $115.00
Complete GM 10-Bolt - donated generously by my 97 SS Camaro lol
Complete LS1 Rear Brake System - $200.00 (included LS1 front brakes as well)
Motive Complete Rear End Master Rebuild Kit - $90.00? (not 100% sure lol)
Total - $505.00
Waiting to be purchased:
Moser Custom Length 31-Spline Hardened Axles with GM Axle Ends - $340.00
C-Clip Eliminator Kit - $160.00
Total - $500.00
Total to be invested in PARTS - $1005.00
Labor will be cheaper because I am doing a lot of it myself. My boss will be helping me with the welding because he knows what he is doing when it comes to welding cast iron, but he said he is gonna hook me up as far as cost goes, so that will help keep the price minimal. By the time it is all said and done, I should be between $1200 and $1500 total installed and ready to go!
Basically, we will be cutting the axle tubes off of both the 10-Bolt and the 8.8. The axle tubes will be welded onto the 8.8 Pumpkin and when it is all said and done, the rear end will maintain the stock width. It will have LS brakes and Moser 31-Spline axles with GM axle ends so I can re-use my factory rims. We will also be using a template from a couple of other builds to fabricate my torque arm mount. More pics coming SOON!
Here is what I started with today...the 8.8" rear end.

I understand that this is going to cost me around a grand less than the price of parts for a Moser or Strange rear end, and I learn a lot in the process. As long as I do it right and do my research, this rear end will be PLENTY for the power I will be producing even on spray. PLUS, it is lighter than a Strange or a Moser rear end. I can use that extra grand I will be saving on my new suspension.

Thats exactly the reason im doing and the fact i have one of the leading manufacturing guys doing these rearends close to me. A) its lighter then a 12 bolt or 9". B) More then adequate for my power level 400rwhp. C) Can be build on the cheap if you have good sources. The welded housing is a 1,000, i got a sick deal on a 31 spline track 4.10 gears rebuild kit for posi and gear install, and a ta diff girdle for 300. The axles will cost me 340 and put it together myself. 1640 for a built rear you know is safe to handle adequate power over a 10 bolt is well worth it IMO. Costs about 800-1000 for a 10 bolt rebuild so do the math.
Unfortunatly my builder is behind but im in no rush to get mine as im still working out the bugs with the new motor and efi 24x swap.

Yea you can pick up a used 12 bolt or 9" ready to go on here for $1200-$1500 if you are patient and diligent in searching the classifieds. And googling "craigslist camaro rear" can sometimes find them cheaper on craigslist. Ive got $600 into my 9" with full suspension upgraded because I bought a complete roller and parted it out.

Got the axle tubes cut off of the 8.8 Rear End and I am working on getting the 10-Bolt ready to be hacked up. I got the new 4.10 Ring Gear onto the Carrier. As I was doing this I noticed that the OLD 8.8 rear end had a Spider Gear Posi Carrier...well, the new carrier I got was from a Ford Explorer and I realized it looks something like a Detroit Locker style carrier. Any thoughts on what it actually is? I know it is a Posi so I know it will do what I want and I am pretty sure it is an upgrade from the spider gear carrier...
Anyways, here is a picture of the progress so far! lol

Guys...get over it. I am not buying a 12-bolt or a 9" or a dana 60. I want this not only for the price, but the weight! Not only that, but I am all about trying new things and being the test dummy...
SO, with that said, please STOP recommending 12-bolt and 9" and dana 60 rear ends! Seriously, is it so hard to let someone experiment and do their own thing?!
