For an "easy" 500rwhp through a 6 speed I would look at AFR 227s, quality shaftmounts (DRE, Jesel, COMP,etc), custom high end pushrods (Manton, Smith Brothers, or Trend), and a solid roller cam spec'd by someone who knows what they are doing - it will need to be aggressive enough to make your 500rwhp goal, but not as aggressive as a drag racing spring eater lobe. Top it off with a single plane like a ported Vic Jr or Supervic and either an elbow+58mm monoblade or a 4bbl TB.
396 will make it easier, but 383 will do it to. I like the 227s for that build because they will work out of the box and not need any additional work. For more power or boost like you want in the future you can have them ported later on...and then the sky(and your wallet) is the limit.
***EDIT*** Note that I said "easy", and not "cheap"...

they dont get very many requests for 4th gens. Anybody done 370ci's? stroke 3.626 with a .030 bore. A 396 or 383 sounds nice though. Wouldn't that be limiting my revs though? Spinning a SBC 396 to 7200+rpms is asking for lots of rotational mass resulting in decrease engine longevity?! You guys are LT1 pros so let me know who here has spun a 396 over 7000+rpms. Anyways if its built right no matter the cubes and taken care of it should last.

More stroke is a good thing Theres no replacement for displacement!!! With a 3.6x crank that 25x duration cam will wanna spin to the moon Where the 3.875 will move the RPM down lower IT will hit the stock 7k limiter though LoL

Was a blue car with pin on hood, all the duct work , and custom ram air setup. Very clean.

396 I wouldnt use a cam that big on a 355 for a street toy Cam Motions says the cam is good for 3000-7200 in a 350 LT1 So with 2 sizes bigger on the stroke the power will be lower hence my guess of 6800 LOL Plus I seen a similar combo that was close
