It seems to me that GM likes to rename the NEW engines that proved themselves from the past......
Why would they name this new engine LT1 then?

Because they generally stomped on the 5.0 and 4.6 stangs when they first came out.

This is nothing new. They have used the LT1, LS6, LS7 and many other RPO codes on multiple engines over the years.

I guess you need to think of it from GM's financial standpoint. If they bring back the lt1, people will be buying 500$ optisparks every day

Just joking btw

I know GM loves you play mind games on its buyers. Why dont they name the new GM V8 "LX1 or LX2"? or do what ford does. Name them after a word. Theres some deep psychology we dont know the answers to if they come out with a Gen V LT1/4.lol Itll be exciting & disappointing at the same time.

Correct....if I remember right....even the LS1 & LS3 rpo codes were used for early 70's smog engines. At least one of them was a very low HP 402" bbc.
Still just makes that many more postings to look through when looking for used parts. I already have to deal with LT1 searches on craigslist & ebay bringing up tons of GM cars and trucks that use it as a TRIM LEVEL designation. LOL

Yes and also the L99's were used as an LS engine base and LT(4.3) based.

Big Block 427 LS-1: produced 1969, 10.25:1 compression, Q-jet carburetor, oval port closed chamber heads, hydraulic lifters, nodular iron crankshaft, and two-bolt main caps. It produced 335 hp (250 kW).

Big Block 402 LS-3: produced 1970-2, 10.25:1 (1970) or 8.5:1 (1971) compression, hydraulic lifters, nodular iron crankshaft, and two-bolt main caps. It produced 330 hp (250 kW) (1970), 300 hp (220 kW) (1971), 210 or 240 hp (160 or 180 kW) (1972 net horsepower, single or dual exhaust)

Big Block 454 A 465 hp (347 kW) and 490 lb·ft (660 N·m) version of the 454, dubbed LS7 was also designed but never went to production. However, a handful of LS7 intake manifolds were produced and sold by a few Chevy dealers as performance parts. The LS7 was later offered as a crate engine from GM and advertised at 500 Gross HP.

Power began falling off after 1970, with the 1971 LS5 producing 365 hp (272 kW) and 465 lb·ft (630 N·m), and the LS6 option coming in at 425 hp (317 kW) and 475 lb·ft (644 N·m). Only the LS5 remained in 1972, when SAE net power ratings and the move towards emission compliance resulted in to 270 hp (200 kW) and 390 lb·ft (530 N·m). The 1973 LS4 produced 275 hp (205 kW) and 390 lb·ft (530 N·m), with 5 hp (3.7 kW) and 10 lb·ft (14 N·m) gone the following year.

Yep, happens all the time with GM. You only have Lxx to deal with a ton of engines so they get reused all the time.

How about a 2.5l iron duke LS6 from the late 70's to early 80's, nothing but mean there.

Does anybody on this site actually work for GM and gets inside information the public can barley get there hands on?! I would Love to find out more about Gen V SBC other then its going to be Direct Injection. Im sure and if so the new LT1 comes out there will be tons of swaps. I wonder what LSX guys are going to do when it came time to go LTX. Im having visions of the LTX shootout going to be very interesting.

If this is true than if I get a reverse cooled aluminum Donavan big block and call it an LT6 and enter the next LTX shootout in extreme street class!

I doubt theyll mix our lt1's with the new ones in the shoot out. Theyll just change our section name to "optispark shootout" or something.

I really think GM screwed up big time with the ZL1. The top Camaro should have been Z28, and the stock eliminator car should have been ZL1. Why the hell didn't they name the new stock eliminator after the original. No, name if after the loop-hole that allowed Fred Gibb to get the original... BRILLIANT!
