Default Bad Port Job

I was just wondering what a bad port job looks like. When looking from the top of the head into the inside of the intake and exhaust ports, I see areas that look like too much material was removed. Should it be smooth all of the way through? I hope what I'm asking makes sense.

define "smooth" the actual texture is not that big a deal. If there are waves or big humps/dips from where a cutter got away from the porter I might be concerned. That said sometimes CNC'd heads will have some "as cast" areas left behind due to core shift, even high quality head work.

Can you take them to a professional and have them looked at?
I really don't think people describing things over the internet will help a lot and taking good pictures of such a thing is a challenge, a picture ona computer screen can be very decieving vs. what is or is not actually there.

Thanks for the reply. Well, the texture is smooth. I just noticed areas where there is an actual hole through the metal, like too much material was removed in that particular spot. I wish I had pictures.

That's probably the rocker stud, that hole is normal, just be sure you use good thread sealer on your studs.

In very well ported heads the rocker stud holes will be open into the intake ports. Now if you see just a couple that could indicate inconsistency port to port which would be bad.

That hole is just the rocker stud hole.

The stuff on the valve guide is just some sort of assembly grease.
