I went from 3.23 to 4.10 in my auto and realized that first gear was useless on street tires. Changed to 3.73 and couldn't be happier.

I went from a stock 2.73 to a Richmond 3.73. One of the best modsI have ever done to the car. I just wish I would have went with a GM Motive gear. The Richmond gear whines a little.

The whine is in your setup, not "Richmond". I've run Richmond's all the way to 4.88 ratio and every set was dead quiet.

Haha all depends on what you're going for. I do like my whiskey, jerk

I definitely enjoyed my 3.73s/3600 stall for dig racing on the street, but there were a few guys with 3.42s/3200-3600 stall and they were nice as well

All comes down to what you want. I didn't like ~3k cruising rpm at 80mph (yes, 70mph speed limit and everybody goes faster than that)

This. My Motive 3.73s whined because I was naive and the guy who installed them didn't tell me how to heat cycle them properly. For me, they whined mostly between 42-55mph when the car kicked into OD

whine isn't in the breakin either it is a setup issue. I say that having done a set of my own that had a similar slight noise is a small speed window just like that.

Good to know. I was always told it was a combo of both setup and breaking in - mostly breaking in.

Glad to know I'm not fully at fault. The installer was recommended to me by a local shop and he did it for a decent price. Safe to say I won't do that again though

Key ingredient to choosing gears. Even though it's a M6, I went from 4.10's to 3.73's and picked up over a mph in the 1/4 and lost a tenth in ET and sacrificed maybe .05 on the 60' all for much better driveability and better track times/mph. MPG stayed exactly the same.

I would go 3.73, if it is within the difference of your friends 3.42 gears price.

I like the idea of having the entire housing w/ 3.42s swapped from an m6, that would be perfect for me. What part # do I look for & is there a way to make sure I am not getting a pos & I am getting a 3.42??

Only way to know what gears are in the housing is to turn the yoke and count the revolutions. For 3.42 gears the yoke should turn basically 3.5 times per one revolution of the axles.

if the car is all about the1/4 mile, 3:73

for all around, IMHO, 3:42

if getting gears make sure you get the pinion that accepts reluctor gear for ABS....if you care

ABS reluctor gears can be hard to find. Bob Shirley on the Impala forum makes them $100

Sorry to be a little post happy but I decided to go on craigslist this Morning, A local guy has a 3.42 where I can pick it up for 250 w/ 80k on it. I was not ready so fast b/c I need shocks/Bilsteins first. Do I need to grab it fast or are they always available? I really appriciate the advice.

You would need a 3 series carrier for it unless it happens to be for a 2 series or you want to run the spacer to make them fit. Summit has 2 series version for $160 new.

250 complete with 80K I would jump on that. Looks for leaks at the axels, pinion flange, and diff cover.
