i have to agree to disagree with the installer being the problem with aftermarket gears whining! I was a tech for about 4 years...certified in gears....Not that, that means ****, But i have noticed with cheap aftermarket gears are more likely to whine and that gm gears are quieter. Just my two cents. Set up several sets and have destroyed several sets.

I agree draggin on the aftermarket sets ,but allot of the time it is the installer or DIY that is the issue.O.P. find out if you car came with and that will tell you if it came with a 3.23 is a series 3 carrier if its a 273 then series 2

Go with the 4:10's they'll last if you dont abuse too much & you'll get to use 6th gear. I have them in my DD ,and perfect for street/freeway,at 80-85mph I average 26 mpg+ on long drives ,before the gears I couldnt even get to 6th gear without luggin' the motor.

Anyone know why this Motive 3.90 ring and pinion set is $400 and the rest are half this?

"cheap aftermarket" - I'd say you just may have a point there
Someone above mentioned Richmonds being loud. I don't consider Richmond cheap aftermarket, have plenty of experience with them, and every set has been quiet.

I've always seen complaints about those who use Richmonds having noise problems. I've just always thought they were a more finicky gear to set up. Seems everyone who's had a good installer has always been happy with Motive gears. It's what I have in my 12-bolt now and it's quiet as stock.... until the harmonics kick in and it gets transferred through the body from the chassis mount torque arm.

Not sure how often you go to the track, but if you don't then spend the money on the 10-bolt as suggested and don't worry about a heavier duty diff. If you do go to the track then I wouldn't spend a dime on what you have now and save.

Speedinc wants $190 for that same gearset and that has been their price for the last couple years.

I've had richmond's and now have motive's. Installed by 2 different experienced mechanics...both are noisy.

I'd recommend GM parts if you can find/afford them.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!

Dont forget the solid pinion spacer. It will keep the torque from pulling/pushing the pinion too far.
