Never again will I listen to the old folks saying you'll be fine with a cast crank.
how much hp do you think you were pushing with that crank? just curious cause i have a scat cast steel crank in my 383 that i am almost done building, but is not yet in the car. the guys who built the short block for me said that crank could handle 8 lbs. of boost as well, which i am definately starting to doubt. still have time to go forged. thanks

A little higher price but well worth it.
Eagle forged cranks have never been a problem strength wise. As speed demon points out, their specs can be a little loose and there's been word of balance/adding metal stories, but like any other crank it should ALWAYS be checked out by a machinist before it's used for assembly.
My Eagle forged crank has issues, but it balanced easily and didn't require any material to be added. Pilot bearing hole is on the loose side and the flywheel centering flange is larger in dia. than stock. Not bitching. I got what I paid for.

Get rid of the cast crank. 383+boost= big boom and probably a ton more money. Spend the couple hundred to replace it now or you could be in the same situation as the OP.

Callies and Howards both offer 100% American cranks as well, Howard's openly stating Callies machines them for them. There is still made in America stuff out there if people choose to go find it and pay a little more. The Howard's stuff is really quite reasonably priced for a Made in America product.

hokeplaya05, you strongly questioning the competence of your "builder" yet?

Sorry to say, but it's common knowledge that cast cranks are inadequate for anything other then a stock rebuild grocery getter. I would have had it changed the minute you found out it was cast. If you asked for forged, don't settle for cast and build it anyway.

No way in hell I'd run a stock shortblock H/C setup on a cast crank, let alone a stroker or boosted build like some are being told to do.

This. Forged eagle cranks have been 1600+Hp in SBCs, just treat it like any other crank and have it CHECKED before installing. I don't care if its a crazy expensive custom billet job, you still need to check and balance everything before installing.

We were talking about some made in America cranks still being available and one guy has to point out a companies BUDGET line that is forged overseas as if that refutes there are still made in America cranks available.

Far as the Compstar I do have a friend that cracked one at an oil hole and caught it before failure(really good ear), was a 700ish HP smallblock and Callies treated him well when he upgraded to the crank he should have bought the first time around.

You would be a lot better off with a forged crank, at least a Scat. I have used several Scats, never a problem. I would not put eagle anything in an engine of mine. Cheaper for a reason. Sorry yours broke.
