Default Mail Order Tunes

Are these tunes working on your cars? Any benefits or handicaps over a dyno tune. I do not like the tune I have. Car is running way to rich. When he was tuning my car he did not use the sensor they stick in your exhaust, I asked him about it and said it doesn't need it.

Was it a mail order tune or a dyno tune?

Most reputable tuners can tune quite accurately a bolt on car or less via mail order. Once you start modding the engine with different heads, cam, ect., that's when you need to consider a dyno tune.

However, if you're asking the question of "when he tuned my car he didn't use the sensor in my exhaust" it is making me think you didn't get your tune via a mail order tune. The sensor the put in your exhaust is a wideband 02 sensor that shows how rich or lean your car is, and is commonly used when dyno tuning.

I went for a dyno tune, he did not use the wideband. But you said that mail order is good for only bolt ons... I'm way past bolt-ons. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, if you've modded the motor, then you probably should get a dyno tune from a reputable tuner. Preferably one who is familiar with LT1 cars like Bryan Herter from PCM's for less.

Emailed the tuner I had gone to... He said he would re-tune at no extra charge.

We had a bunch of local guys use a tuner a few years ago. Some liked him because if there was something wrong with their tune, he would re-tune it for free. The problem was nearly all of them had to go back to him time and time again because he didn't get it right.

My point is, you are better off going with someone who knows what they are doing. If your car needs to be re-tuned because they didn't do it right the first time, that should throw up a red flag. Its one thing if there was something wrong with your car preventing it from being tuned properly. But if all it needs is a tune, there should be no reason a good tuner can't get it tuned right for you the first time. He shouldn't need multiple tunes to dial it in.

Having the ability to harvest data so a mail order tune can be adjusted, if needed, is essential.

OP

How do you know you are running rich, you have scan data showing AF?

I have had mail order tunes since I started moding the car. Now a 383, H/C, T56 conversion. It was spot on right out of the box. I did send data back to tuner for what I thought were "tune" issues. All were due to "mechanical" issues that once resolved (clogged CAT) fixed my concerns. A later "dyno" pull to see wtf power I made confirmed AF was spot on.

My point is mail order tunes are very good....if they are done by a qualified tuner. With that said having the car tuned on a dyno with a qualified tuner would be preferable. In my case the tuner I choose is in Oklahoma and I live in Calif. so mail order is what I do.

My car runs great on a mail order tune.

If you use an off the shelf cam, much higher chances the tune will be spot on or as close as it gets.

I have a hotcam and its tuned by Ion. I am sure he has did a few...

Bryan Herter tuned my Bolton nitrous setup, my bolt on, cam nitrous setup with zero complaints. With a 180 thermostat and the fans coming on at 190 I cruise the freeway and temp never goes above 185 pulling 28 miles per gallon at 70mph. In town 190's are max and average 22 mpg. Performance gains were maybe a .10 in the quarter but the tune works great with up to a 150 wet shot. My setup is good for 11.80's with 3.07 gears.
