Lunati Springs w/ High Spring Rate: Good or Bad?
So me and my builder are about to start putting my lt1 back together after getting all the parts in for it. I ordered Lunati dual valve spring kit as a recommendation from Lloyd Elliot to use with the cam I bought from him. But my builder still isn't certain about them because of their high spring rate. He remeasured them tonight at 170# closed and 400# open. Is this a typical spring rate to run in a cammed LT1 or is it too much for my application? Just wanting some opinions before putting everything together. Mods in sig

Well my builder called Lunati today and talked about the springs. Lunati said there's no way they would use these springs in my application. But I also talked to Lloyd Elliot and he said they would be fine and to use them at a 1.55 install height but my builder says there's no way to get them that short and that we would have to install them at 1.725

No way in hell 1.55 installed is what Lloyd told you. I would not trust Lloyd but I also do not believe he told you that. Hell stock is more like 1.700 and often with larger cams we use longer valves to make room for taller springs.
170/400 is too much for a hydraulic cam but IMO that is a problem caused by your misinformation on installed height. If Lloyd said that in an email it was a tyop and if he said it on the phone you misunderstood him. I would sooner expect 1.750"

i don't trust lunati... their cam fucked my stroker up twice... 2nd time their cam snapped in half with 1k miles on the motor. i didn't even get a chace to race it after the rebuild. first time cam lobes wear out bending and snapping and bending push rods. i looked past the first time, but snapping in half in block... GARBAGE!!! go with comp cams or GM performance stuff.

Well I guess it was just a miscommunication over the phone. So I emailed him and asked what he said to make sure and he said between 1.750-1.770. Either way, my builder still doesn't like how high they are so he's wanting to buy smaller locators

As long as your lifters and cam are good they will be good at Llyods recommended install height, 1.75.
A poorly hardened cam lobe or old worn out lifters won't like the spring pressure, but with new parts you will be fine.
