Hotcam here. Hope to get it out on the track here pretty soon to see what it does. I'm hoping for mid 12's (with some 4.10's). The reason I went with it is I would have had to spend $150 more for a custom grind billet cam, which I didn't have at the time. It does feel good on the street though.

I was happy with the performance the hotcam gave me. I went 12.2 and 7.70s 1/8th mile on the kit. I would do it again for the price.

I've seen people get great results with the hotcam, in the range of 350rwhp. However, those are generally the exception rather than the rule, as the vast majority of hotcammed cars I've seen, heard of or read about fall about 20-30 rwhp short of that. It is a cam that will yield a nice power increase over stock and not give lots of driveability problems, so if that's all you're after then you'll likely be pleased with it.

First sentence, absolutely correct. Second one, well.....yea, if all you want is dyno numbers, then get something along the lines of a 847 or 306 and let it ride. It'll be somewhat lazy under the curve with stock heads though, and won't drive was well as some of the smaller numbers. You'll also have to spin it to ~6700rpm to get those numbers. You'll also need steep gears and a big stall to keep the bigger cams happy.

I've already been down the 'cam only' road, as have several of my local buddies. I ran a XE 224/236 on a 112 lsa, .536/.555 lift. Numbers were 352/364 SAE through MAC shorties and full catback. It peaked before 6200 and had a nice, fat torque curve that would willingly pull 6th gear from 1500rpm with stock 3.42s. Another local guy here ran the same grind on a 114 lsa and made 348rwhp through a stalled auto, the car also goes 12.0s at 111+ at ~3500 lbs.
Point being, you don't need one of the bigger cams to make good power with stock heads.

Get good springs, RR's, some longtubes, and a good tune.
Solid advice.

I agree, the only reason i say get the highest lift possible for stock heads is you will always wish you would have went with a higher lift cam once you get one. IMO
But like you just said there is smaller lift cams that are good cams and make good power

If I may interject,

Any consensus on running the Hotcam or Comp 503 with stock(read:high-mileage) valvetrain? Or by just doing fresh springs and leaving the rest of the valvetrain alone?
