If youre gonna keep it stock minus a few bolt ons, id go for a clean lt1 in youre situation.

But only if you know you wont get the mod bug later down the road. When i first bought my lt1, i was under the impression that its cheaper to mod a lt1, but it really isnt. Aftermarket parts are equally expensive for both platforms, but they are very limited for the lt1. Less tunning options aswell. Less cam options unless you go custom cam. Less options for head porting too.

Just something to consider...

I've had both. 93 LT1 M6 and 98 LS1 M6. I'll take the LS1 any day of the week. It's easier to work on, it's more reliable, sounds better, gets better MPG, and it's a crap ton faster.

My current daily is a '95 Impala SS but I did daily my LS1 Camaro for years. The LS1 is just a better engine. Easier to work on, better ignition system, way more power. That being said I'm pretty happy with the LT1 for getting from point A to point B, it gets decent mileage in such a heavy car, and on 87 octane at that.

I have had both as well and would take the LS1 without thinking.

Sometimes, spending a little more up front can save you a lot down the road.

The LT1 is not a bad motor at all. Once you learn their character its a fantastic motor, but the LS1 is better in every single way.

No bench racer here. How many bolt-on eleven second LT1 cars do you know of? Fastest LS1 F body customer of mine I can think of has gone 11.55 at Houston a few years ago. Tough to go elevens and never had a valve cover off.
Colman Roddy from down there keeps clicking off 8.90s with his black NA LS1 Camaro. Know of any NA eight second LT1 F body cars? I don't. A few with nitrous.
The LT1 cars are dirt cheap now, but any other advantage over an LS1 car is simply imagined.

Just like the LS1 vs the original LT1, technology marches on.

Almost every single way. However, LT1's sound ten times better than LS1's.

Ls1 for the win hands down. don't have to worry about the shitty opti. IMO the ls1 is faster in every aspect and more reliable in my opinion. I have had 2 Lt1 cars and 1 ls1 car and I would never buy a lt1 car again unless I got one hell of a deal in it.

I don't know more about LS1's than you Ed BUT I bet that 8.90 car is not an LS1... Maybe an LS series motor but not an LS1...

I think it is funny how we compare these two motors. Both can Handle a 200 shot in stock form. Add a tune, headers and a fuel pump and you can out run 90% of head cam cars out there, so it really doesn't matter unless you like to be specific about how you make the power.

If money is an issue then you should stop thinking about a fast car and save money to get yourself stable for the future. If you think to the future it generally makes it a LOT more fun later. I remember when I was broke and trying to do things like people who were older than me were. You just can't enjoy anything when you go home and cant afford stuff because you were trying to do things you shouldn't. Remember that the fast ones got there after a long time and a bunch of money, you shouldn't try to do the same in half the time.

But to answer. I like to tune LS cars more than LT cars and that seems to be the trend. If you can't do the stuff yourself, pick a car that people like to work on.

its all about budget, for example 4k will get you a real nice lt1 car, but 4k can get you a beat to hell ls1. LS1 is better all around performance wise, just is, its newer and better. Both are damn reliable. This has been beat to death but might as well keep talking about it.

I used to race Colman back in the 80s, he is a friend on Facebook. He told me it an LS1 stroker. (408" I think) He didn't call is an LS anything else. He runs test & tuned at Baytown all the time. Black Camaro with long wheelie bars. He doesn't frequent site like this, but I'll bet somebody that hangs out here has seen the car. Most of you would think he is old, probably in his 50s. He is a former NHRA Comp Eliminator world champ. He knows what he is doing. Not a kid with his first car.

Hope this works. It's also a hydraulic roller. 8.92 @ 150.50 MPH.
2002 Camaro, at Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown TX.
As fast as he is, surely somebody here from the Houston/Baytown area knows of Coleman Roddy.

Do that with an LTanything.

How about the eleven second LS1 bolt on cars ? Nobody mentioned that one.
They get better gas mileage too. I like the LT1, they are brain dead easy to tune, and they used to be the thing. I still like beating up on LS1s with my LT1, just because they don't usually take it very well. LOL But, I know it is only because it's not as well prepped.

There is nothing wrong with LT1s and you can get them running for 1500-2000. Cant find running LS1s that cheap and with the money left over you would spin a stock LS1 around pretty easy. But if youre just looking for a daily find a 98-99 z28 for the low and enjoy......like this one http://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/cto/4303945581.html

But a note for the fanboys. San Diego is a pretty big city. My search on craigslist found 147 matches for Camaros under $5000(tons of trolls). Only >>>>1<<<< LS1 over 2 dozen LT1s. Most under 3k but if the one in my link is solid by any means its a no brainer. Id trade my 94 with mods for a stock LS in a heartbeat and not think twice.

They are cheaper for a reason.
If that is all you can afford, that is what you should buy.
