with cali smog i'm going to bet you get a mild cam and heads then spray your way to 450rwhp
if your car is totally stock then you have a lot of work to do.
you'll need:
headers (shorties because of cali smog)
58mm throttle body
portwork on intake manifold
ported stock heads or ported aftermarket heads
roller rockers
pushrods
gaskets
rocker studs
guide plates
valve springs
wet nitrous kit
i'm probably missing some stuff but thats most of it

those places can help you out a lot. Lloyd at elliotsportworks really knows his stuff.
this list isn't even including a new rearend to hold the power and an upgraded transmission

^True, .31 difference in rear end ratio is not even worth the money or trouble, you would barely feel it, plus the factory gears are quiet, aftermarket ones will have a slight whine. I'd put a girdle on it however to keep from breaking the gears so easily in the 10 bolt. Even with 4.10s it will only turn 2100 RPM at a 75mph cruise in 6th; and it's a big seat in the pants improvement.

^^ Only way I see it getting done along with a big shot just to pass our smog... Also agree with 4.10s I daily mine with a 60+ mile round trip and can't complain at all. Be prepared to break the rear though. After breaking mine a 2nd time I just went with a 9".

Don't get your panties in a wad...well most of them are "incorrectly installed" by that definition; distortion can also play a role; I'll bet the majority of people on here with aftermarket gears installed are more prone to whine than stock ones if you took a poll; your average Joe Blow mechanic is not going to be as good as the GM assembly line. It's also well known that some gear brands (Such as Richmond) are noisier than others. Oh, yeah, the word is "misinformation" smart guy!

4.10s, t56, sticky tires and 450 rwhp is a recipe for a broken rear end. What do you want the 450rwhp for? 1/4 mile or **** around on street tires on the street? On street tires on the street you'll be ok for a little while but on the track 300rwhp and a good launch will grenade a 10 bolt.

I dont care who makes the gears or who installs them, if they whine then there not installed correctly period. If most have whining gears that does not mean there crappy gears it means they most likly were installed correctly. I have heard and seen it many times myself and just shake my head and say leave it to someone who knows what they are doing. Gears is not something most shade tree guys should be doing unless they have done it many times in the past, it takes time to set it up correctly . So you must be misinformedand like to spread rumors and scare people away from upgrading there gears unless there factory gears is just non sence imo. Different ways to have gears setup also. Whoever setup the 12 bolt under my car set the 4.11 gears so that under WOT there is better engagement, my gears are noisy mostly under deceleration and light throttle.
Solid pinion spacer helped the most in my case, I literally crushed the crush sleeve.
