Question Oil pump and related parts questions?

I'm gathering parts for my new build and just trying to make sure I get all the right parts. I've read so many different threads and they all have different advise. Right now I have a NIB Melling M155 oil pump and a 155s pickup. I've read that there has been issues with this pump and that the Melling 10554 is a better option to still keep the standard vol. The 10554 comes with the Intermediate Shaft with Steel Guide. I read that this shaft, "although an upgrade from the nylon stock one", is not the right "hardened" one to go with. Other's say it is.

Will the shaft that comes with the 10554 be the right one to use?

Will my 155s pickup work with the 10554 using the stock oil pan?

The 10554 comes with a pink spring already installed, this is the same as the GM white spring correct?

Do I need an new oil pump drive gear or will my stock one be fine? I'm getting a new custom grind cam from LE. Some say to get a new gear so that it wears with the new cam?

The 10554 shaft should be hardened steel. The only other one I know of people using is made by ARP. Considering the stock one is made of plastic, I highly doubt the Melling piece is inadequate.

Yes, the springs are pretty much the same. I think it's a 70psi relief.

Both pumps are standard volume so it's probably not necessary to replace the drive gear. If it's a fresh motor I would do it anyway.

I emailed Melling with a few questions while planning my build. The two deciding factors that steered me toward the 10554 were the thicker pump housing and steel gears. There were problems with non-select pump housings and powdered metal gears breaking. The select 10554 isn't that much more and it comes with the hardened drive shaft. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.

What Melling said:
"The M155 has PM gears & the 10554 has billet steel gears
The M155 still uses the light weight stock type casting.
The 10554 has always used the old style HD housing."

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Any idea if the 155s pickup will work with the 10554 pump?

I can't imagine it wouldn't. I think they're both 3/4" press fit.

Just verified it with melling tech support. The 155s pickup will work with the 10554 pump. Just incase anyone else wants to know.
