Default lt1 smells like coolant under the hood

My car always smells like coolant under the hood and you can smell it sometimes driving when taking off. It also runs hot I was wondering if it could be the the water pump going bad and it weeps coolant and burns off. The water pump was brand new (Ac delco) about 800 miles ago on the new motor. My overflow tank is also detached from my battery tray could that cause the smell. Any help would be great

Small leaks can be hard to find sometimes. Mine was leaking from the top hose onto the water pump then evaporating. You can put some dye in the coolant to help find it or get a pressure tester.

If the overflow hose is not going into the remote reservoir under the battery tray, then that is a leak. It is also a good way to get air you don't want into your cooling system. Coolant is supposed to flow to and from the reservoir basically at every heat and cool cycle.

I pretty sure the hose is still going into the reservoir. The metal hose under the battery tray is all corroded But it doesn't seem to leak. It dribbles coolant when it gets hot and coming to a stop. Is the reservoir and tray supposed to be one whole piece? I can remove the reservoir in a separate piece from the tray

Yes, the tray and tank are supposed to be one piece.

Dorman makes a replacement overflow res/battery tray, RockAuto $22. I have one, it's made good.
