Default 24x Install Question

Hello,

Car is a 1995 Z28 w/ electric water pump.

Two questions:

1.) I have the timing cover off and installed the cam play with the 3 bolts. Now I am working on the crank reluctor plate. The EFI instructions say to remove the old reluctor which I don't have on mine. I guess that is normal right since the picture is from a 97 and mine is a 95?

Then they say to slide the new reluctor over the crankshaft key

I guess I am a little confused on how the woodruff key works. I slid mine onto the crank and lined it up without the key. The kit came with one, but I am not sure the correct way to install or if my setup even requires it? Its hard to see from their picture and googling didnt provide me any definite answers.

2.) When I removed the timing cover, the oil pan gasket tore right around the driver side front stud. Can I fix this with gasket goo or do I need to outright replace. I dont think it is totally torn, perhaps just around the bolt hole, but I am not sure.

Thank you kindly in advance!

Yes, you would not have an OEM reluctor wheel. For the key you need to pull the old timing gear sprocket off, install a 96+ key and then reinstall the gear/reluctor.

If you tore the oil pan gasket, drop the pan down a tad, sneak out old one, and sneak in a new one. Rigging it will only make for leaks down the road, you are there now do it right.

Pulled the timing chain and looks like I do in fact have a crank key. Do I need to install this new one? The one in there looks identical. If so, is there a trick to getting them out and popping in the new one? I fiddled with it for a second, but it didn't easily come out.

Look closer they are not the same. change them out. you can tap the front down in with a punch and the rear will pop up where you can pry it out with a screwdriver or grab it with a pair of dykes.

The old key will only engage the timing sprocket, so yes, you need the new one to reach the reluctor.

You are supposed to lower the front of the oil pan before removing the timing cover. That is why you tore the seal. Install is the reverse-timing cover then oil pan.

I have read that the 24X conversion will not work with the 95 Model, I would like to see how yours come our because I was thinking about that kit also.

Where did you hear that? You can convert any LT1 over to 24x, just need to get the correct parts from EFI Connection. I am getting ready to start on my 95 next week.

The LS pcm can't control 94 and 95 4l60e transmissions. Manual trans.. no problem.

This is correct, you can get a 96 up trans or I've read you can install the 96 valve body and wiring and front pump assy to convert 94/95 to the 96 up style. but I have never done it. or maybe it's that you can convert the 96 up to a 94 95 style either way, Check with Cahill transmissions, He can give you the exact instructions on this conversion.

Man, I am having a hell of a time with this woodruff key. Is there a trick?

Going in from the front is leaving me with a bent screwdriver tip.

The vice grips are just just chewing up the key.

Tap the back of the key down with a punch that's either the same size of the key or smaller. The front end will lift up and you can grab it with a pair of vice grips. Tap the new key in with the same punch and a little grease.

Got it, but the tap would only push it down ever so slightly. Had to pry the back (engine side) up with a flat head. Broke a punch in the process!

At least it's out now. I did mine the other day and it came out pretty easy. It was probably easier being on an engine stand though.

So, now I am having a hell of a time getting the new one in. I think my crank slot might be a bit narrow. I spent a good 20 minutes trying to punch the new one in and I am not even getting it close flush with the crank. I even tried to slide the key on the timing chain hub and reluctor and it seemed to big.

Any possiblility I need to do some filing?

It will fit. It's not too narrow. The crank I'm using for my new build is from a 95. It's a tight fit, don't try to force the reluctor over it. The keyway is relatively soft metal and will get deformed if you force it. It happened to me when I installed my timing gear. Ended up having to buy another keyway and starting over. Just tap it in a little at a time. It won't sit completely flush.
