Default Help with pulley

Ok,so I'm taking off the main hub to replace seals due to an oil leak. I bought the car in May and have zero history. 97 TA LT1.

As you can see in the pics I got the main pulley off but the hub behind it is not what I was expecting for a LT1.

Can anyone help explain what it is and possibly how to remove? Obviously there is a bolt in the center but I was expecting the 3 winged hub typical of the LT1.

Thanks!

That's not stock, but I'm guessing it should come off like a stock hub. Remove the center bolt and use a puller on it as you would a stock hub.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would recognize it (brand etc.). I have a March UD pulley going on.

Guessing that is some sort of underdrive already. UDs don't do much for LT1s anyway.

Interesting - why would you still need the stock dampener put on the end? And hey after being a member on here since 2001 a big THANKS shbox to all the diagrams you have provided. I have had 3 LS1's but this is the first LT1 I've worked on extensively and your work has saved me a ton of work the last 3 months!

That pulley should also slide off to expose the hub.

You still need the dampener, because the UD pulleys don't always have one.

You don't need to take the UD pulley off to get the hub off. If you want to take it off and depending on how long the UD pulley has been on the hub it can be a chore. You can try to grab it with both hands and wiggle it back/forth if there is any play in it. Eventually it will come off. If there is no play in it you will have to take a pry bar and hammer to it. This will most likely damage it. I had my engine on a stand, hammered it and when it finally broke loose, shot about six feet away from the stand.

Managed to slide it right off, it appears to be an ASP underdrive pulley. Got the hub off too last night. Scary, the hub bolt was loose. I'm replacing all seals but would a loose hub bolt let oil out too? This all started with oil dripping along the cps.

No. Oil leaking from a seal will sling oil everywhere as well as drip from the lowest point. If oil is only dripping off the sensor then it may be leaking from only the sensor. I think it has a an o-ring gasket?

OK, new issue. The timing cover looks beat up on the inside. Where can I get a replacement? All I'm finding is ebay for $200-$300.

How is it beat up? You need to find out why before simply replacing the cover. Take a pic and post it up.

I don't think that will matter.

Get some mineral spirits, nylon brush and clean it? Thing is, if your timing cover has baked on oil like that, so does the rest of the inside of your engine.

Yep, I'm guessing possibly your right. The only history I have is he did heads and gm hotcam. It's not the varnish on the timing cover I'm trying to show in the pics it is the bent lips on the crank and opti.

Understood, but even so I do not think it should be a problem. If they interfere with the OD of the seal then you can sand them down.

I see what you are talking about, now and agree with what SS RRR said above.
