Default What does it take to break 9s?

General question but also opinion based. What weight, power level, suspension and mods does it take to break 9s?

Should it be all power based? Suspension based? I think it should be an equal portion of both. Some people has spent a ton of $$$ while some others have spent significantly less.

What have you guys done, or think should be done to get 9s? (Obviously my quest is to hit that number eventually)

So lets here your story or plans!

~700whp, a 1.5 sixty and a 3400lb car

If you have the suspension to sixty that quick, your car should do nines.

It has been done with as little as 530whp on a dynojet. Look up Rick Abare's car. The right suspension will go a long way. I wouldn't call it a street car though.

I got a serious Wild Hair after reading about Ben Moore's 3180lb and 480whp LT1 went and 1.28 60ft 9.86 @134. I know he has a huge stall and stock pcm. I know That I'll be heavier So its kinda possible. I know other guys here are very close to hitting those numbers.

I just like disappointing LS guys

Your question is pretty general. Every combo will be different. Take a look at the fast list and do some homework on what made their combo hit 9's. As a poor example, I'm reasonably far from 9's but I have the power to get there if the car was setup/driven to do it. With all you are planning on doing with the car, I would EXPECT a 9 sec slip.

I never thought to question the guys on the Fast list. But after reading Ben Moore's story, he definitely a LT1 inspiration to me. Decent power and all suspension and weight management.

I dont think your far from 9s, I just dont think you set 9s as a goal. I'd love to see that Vert go 9s. I've told all my friends about your build. Its pretty amazing! What do you plan on doing with the Hell Cat?

It takes a whole lot less power if the car's chassis and drivetrain is set up and optimized for the drag strip.

As far as answering your question about "what type of mods does it take", the short answer is "most or all of them." Generally speaking in any case it will involve a complete motor build and complete fortification of the driveline as well as at least some chassis and suspension upgrades.

9's was not my goal but I wouldn't argue with a slip showing it. Thanks for the compliments on the build. I will be trying 28's and more suspension adjustment next time out to see if that helps anything. My fear is getting very close to 9's and THEN it becoming my goal lol. Hellcat will be a 3 season DD. I like the warranty so it will likely get just DRs and an aluminum driveshaft (stocker has been known to a weak point for some folks with a sticky tire).

It doesnt take a lot. Your build is far more than capable. Don't focus on making big power right off the bat. Get the car to sixty foot as hard as it can and let it eat

Not to take away from cars like ed Wright'. He is a very ssmart man , but you have to realise that there are lots of things on a comp or stock elimanator car that you can't do on a street car. They focus on applying all there power and making the car sixty, the rest is just raw hp vs vehicle weight for the most part.

Focus on getting the car to sixty. Tune, tune, tune till you know whatthat eengine wants and i bet you'll be surprised you will push deep into the 9s. But it will take time to make converter adjustments, suspensio, eetc.

Very nice! This is the type of info I was looking for. Specifics! That combo and weight is pretty impressive to me. I have almost full suspension minus the upper and lower A arms.

Nice job again!

You know, thats what my father in law just told me the other day. He has a 511ci Chevy II, 2980 lbs runs consistently 8.70s. His motor alone made 799.8hp on the engine dyno. And he tuned and tuned and tuned some more. I think his setup runs very well for what it is.

He says that if I can 60ft, the rest will be a cake walk if everything is setup correctly!
