Trans Cooler Location?
I am getting ready to install my B&M trans cooler on my 97 Z28 and have read just about all the write ups on it. One question I still have is where to mount it on the radiator? Is there any spot that is better to mount it? Also I have read people use spacers to leave a gap between the trans cooler and radiator, what do you use to create that gap? I will be using the zip tie things that came with the cooler.
I did the same thing, laid it on the front passenger side of the radiator, zipped it in with the supplied zip ties. Only difference is that I put mine in series with the stock cooler, my SS4000 stall stays nice and cool even if I start hot lapping.
You bypass the stock radiator cooler. For best cooling you do not lay it directly on the radiator, you gap it.
Bypassing the stock cooler gives you cooler temps and when the radiator cooler let's loose you want get coolant taking out your transmission.

Bypassing the stock cooler will get you cooler temps and you don't run the risk of engine coolant taking out your transmission when the radiator cooler let's go.
run them in line. trans builders have said many time to run them both. on my car when running a true street kind of event, 3 back to back 1/4 passes my trans temps dont get over 180. but i also have a 160 thermostat keeping the rad temps lower also. and using the little pads is how u should space it. it needs that space to help with air flow. thats why there is space between the ac condenser and the rad.
Not common but does happen
Make a thread in the automatic section and see what the builders say. You see cooler temps bypassing the stock cooler. I don't see over 160 degrees in the summer bashing my car on the street. The hottest my transmission has got was 179 degrees on a road course after 10 hard laps.
The radiator cooler does give out and in turn pushes engine coolant threw the transmission instantly making it junk.

I bypassed my radiator cooler because my trans temps were getting up to 210+ during daily driving.
Since I bypassed the rad cooler the temps daily driving stay below 160. It goes up a bit if I beat on it but like I said never above 190. Actually I don't remember the last time it went to 180.
