You only need a basic mechanics tool set and some decent knowledge of the lt1. You will need a new timing set(no problem since you have a vented opti), lifters, pushrods, rockers(up to you), valve springs that can handle the lift on your cam. If you want I could point you in the direction of some decent install guides.

A new "timing set" meaning the Opti? ...or cap a rotor? I am not too familiar with the Opti yet. Do I need to change the Opti too because, that is $300 I did not figure into the budget. I have worked on many older SBCs but have not been into the LT1 yet. I was thinking new cam, springs, pushrods, and 1.6 pro-mag rockers (maybe). Do you guys think I should do lifters too or is it not necessary?
no, new timing set as in a new timing chain and possibly a new sprocket, but not likely. there is no need to change the opti, teh cam will not affect the opti in any way. Depending on the year, you might not need new pushrods. Upgraded lifters is your choice as well, stockers will work just fine, though i would replace with new stockers so the wear pattern on the lifters wont afect the cam profile. New rocker arms is up to you, stock will work just fine as well, but i would definately upgrade the springs.

Oh Yeah, DUHHH. I will replace the timing chain too. And now that you said something about wear pattern on the lifters, I want to do them too. How much do stockers run normally?
