So I just picked this up on craigslist. Intake had a small crack which let some debris into the lifter valley. Engine looks like its been redone with new gaskets and looked fairly clean besides some debris from the crack. But I think the plan is to throw in my LE1 heads and cam with new cam bearings and maybe a new oil pump. I plan to flush the block very well with oil before it runs to hopefully remove any left over debris. Anything else I should do? Or should I hurry up and pull the heads and oil pan off to check the block

if you are having new cam bearings put in...you would be down to a bare block so just have the machine shop hot tank the motor

if the existing cam bearings look good, clean the motor

you are pulling the heads and front Timing cover to do the LE H/C.

Pop a few crank/piston caps off and look at bearings while you have this motor on a stand

It looks to have been rebuilt. look at the xhatch on the cyl walls

Didn't have too much time this weekend. I popped one of the heads off real quick this afternoon. Cylinder cross hatching looks good to me so idk if that means its a low mile or rebuilt engine. Not sure what else to think, Ill pop the other one off tomorrow morning along with the oil pan. I do have a question about the head bolts tho. What do ARP head bolts look like and are these re useable? I know the torque to yield arent but these look different to me.

I have read that the 94 and earlier motors did not have TTY head bolts, but do not know if that is the case or not. Those dont look like ARP to me

Those are not ARP and I wouldn't re-use any head bolts that I wasn't 100% sure about.

Get new bolts. Trust me on this.

Even arp are torque to yield. My failed head gasket after 300 miles is proof of that. Reused head ARP and it failed. New bolts every time no matter what or go studs.

Ok so I have encountered another problem. I was looking for a t30 bit tip to remove cam retainer plate and I ended up dropping it right above the engine and it landed in the back right oil hole. Where the **** does this lead too? I have the cam out and ive also tried feeding a small grabber that home depot sold since they didnt have any magnetic ones. Guessing I need to special order a skinny magnet tool but I wish I knew where to fish it from. I pulled the oil pan and didnt see it

Is it the same as this? http://www.grumpysperformance.com/SBCOiling.gif

Ok so I bought 2 magnet tools, one didnt fit other couldnt find the bit tip. Spun the crank and it dropped right down to the oil pan.

I don't think I have ever heard of ARP offering TTY bolts. Unless you had one break, I'd bet you had something else cause it.

See the sixth question in the FAQ.....

Probably was a bad install, not the hardware. Or a combination of both bad install and parts that werent really ARP.

You can re-use ARP bolts.

Maybe. Nothing looked bad. Head was flat, deck was flat. Car blew a head gasket. This was the third time the bolts were used. All were the same length coming in. On the way out two of them had stretched near the blowout. So to me they are a one time use thing. You might have ok luck with it. But mine failed due to reuse of the head bolt.
