Default Loud squealing from starter

I removed the starter when doing the head-gasket change and since I've put it all back together, the car is having a harder time starting and I'm getting a loud squealing from the starter. The link below is for the video.

I was thinking about just buying a new starter since they aren't too expensive. But I wanted to check that this wouldn't be caused by me not wiring something up correctly when putting it back together. Like a ground wire or something. I'm also a bit nervous this may be a flex plate issue. All we really did here is remove the starter and put it back on. Ran the wiring a bit different to avoid clear the headers better but thats about it.

Is it the stock starter? Sounds like the flexplate and starter gear are not meshing correctly.

It's stock. Was working just fine before. Took it out and put it back in. This weekend I'll crawl under there and see if there is anything amiss and try to inspect the flexplate to see if anything is beat up. Not sure why it would be though.

loosen starter bolts and re-align it. Sounds like it is slightly tight against the flexplate

Take the starter out. Check the housing to ensure it's not cracked. Check the mounting area on the block as well.

You're using the correct starter bolts right? Not just some bolts with the right thread and length. They need the knurling on them to keep everything in line as well.

I had the same thing happen to me not long ago. Split my starter in two pieces and cracked it all the way down the bolt hole on the longer side.

what exactly happened? Was there a reason it started doing this?

I'm not really sure what caused this. My assumption is that the stock starter couldn't handle cranking over a higher compression engine.

motors with higher than stock compression can take their toll on a stock starter. Typically the stock starter just gets slow in cranking vs physically breaking. The later can be caused by backfire during cranking or a hydro locked motor

Many of us get a gear reduction style starter like the one the Vette has. Autozone, rock auto, etc. Just order one for a 96 vette

Hmmm.. perhaps changing the blown head gasked and getting the valve job has restored some lost compression resulting in a tired starter being over worked? Might be a stretch. I'll take a look for that 96 vette starter

edit. This it?

Starter motor sounds like it is going. It almost sounds like the reman starter I bought that squealed and then died on me. The replacement to that starter was a better pick.

Starter died. After 8+ hours of detailing so at least it was already in the garage. Didn't show any physical signs of damage but it did make some loud noise when it finally went. The new Corvette starter is a beast. Any idea why they didn't use the same starter on both cars?

In other news, doing some digging around on here about starters, I noticed that the PCM ground was tied into my starter while attached to the block on everyone else's car. Never noticed that before because its been that way since I got the car. Not sure why someone did that in the past.

They didn’t put that starter in to keep cost down and the stock one does just fine with stock compression. I still have the OEM on mine, but my engine is only 11:1.
IIRC the PCM ground is supposed to be off a bolt that fastens the spark plug rail onto the passenger side of the block.
