Default Sup peeps, have a question

How you guys been?

Back in the day the LT1 cars had a ram air scoop you could buy that went in the left side of the splash trey under the air filter to scoop up air.

Anyone know what this was called or have a pic of it? I am thinking about making something similar for my ZL1.

Thanks

You're wanting to make something like a ram air box for the fender, but need to know the name? Makes no sense.

It was a metal scoop that hung down under the bumper to channel air to the filter

Random Technology used to make an ABS plastic one that mounted to the drivers side splash shield and you cut the bottom of the splash shield and it directed air up to the filter. I had one and it worked, my car picked up .10 - .15 reduction in ET and 1-2 mph in the 1/4.

The closer the intake is to the pavement, the hotter the air is. The hotter the intake air - the less power the engine will make.

I remember that piece I also remember it not being so popular. I recall it being kind of pricey and not all that great as regular cold air intake. I was always wondered if it was a good idea though being so low to the ground that it would be a nice way to suck up a puddle. I had that happen with my fender well mounted CAI let me tell you I should have worn diapers that day when I looked inside my intake and saw all the water.

But the question is will you be able to fab up your own? might be simple to do using a LS1 Lid, getting some sheet metal and making a chute for it.

A lot of people don't realize this. There's a lot of heat coming up off the pavement. The power loss from 20-30*F hotter air will be greater than the power gained by a miniscule increase in intake air pressure. You'd probably lose even more power due to the drag generated by pushing the scoop/inlet through the air.

NHRA Pro Stock, when they were still carbureted, were leading the way in ram air scoop efficiency. They found a way to get maximum air velocity entering the scoop and trap that air once in the scoop to increase pressure over the carbs. Even with multi-million dollar race programs, they were gaining, at best recorded, 48 hp from that scoop on a 1400+ hp, 10,000+ rpm engine. However, at 200 mph, it was costing them 32 hp just to push the scoop through the air.

I confidently say that 90% of the (amateur) scoops and functional ram airs out there are slowing the car down with wind drag more than helping with air flow.

On 3rd gen Camaros, Ive seen guys remove one of the drive side headlights and fashion something there. Could probably do the same on the LT1 camaros.
