Ported heads
What are the average gains anyone has seen with just getting the heads ported? You know maybe with a few bolt-ons. Wanna get the 93 TA into the "smoke the LS-1 guys" stage with their stinkin free flowing heads.
I had a cheap port job, mods in sig minus cam... I was trapping 103 with traction issues.. (2200 stall) and I had many squirmishes with the LS1 camp.. it was 50/50 win some lose some. If I had headers it would have sealed the deal easily. (Some stock ls1 cars are hard to beat period though... freaks they are!!!)
better get a cam if you have your heads ported or you won't see too much of a gain. Get your heads ported, get a comp cams 305 cam, get you intake port matched, and get a good set of headers with 1 3/4 inch primary tubes, and a good computer program and you will eat ls1's for breakfast!
If beating stock LS1's is your goal it would be much easier/cheaper to pick a decent cam to work with the stock heads. You'll see greater gains from that than just porting the heads and running the stock cam.

I think the only reason to go with a cam instead of heads is cost. If you want to do heads you could probably get about 350HP with the proper supporting bolt ons. However I will agree that the cam is the main restriction in our engines. If you want to play it "really" safe with emmissions keep the stock cam and get the heads as you wont make more than 370 with the stock heads NA.

I was looking at the LT4 Hotcam at Summit. The cam specs are .525/.525 (1.6), 218/228 @0.050. Could I get away wit a diff. cam with more lift and duration on a stock ecm? Also if I can get the cam cheaper somewhere else please let me know.

I was gonna go with a blower..but i dont have the time to switch internals and all that, im trying to move to california...so i decided to buy that Gm847 cam , get the full exhaust (cept i have to have shortys, grrr damn california emmisions) and a couple of other bolt ons and goodies, i have a friend who ports heads as a hobby in my car club...the man is gold with heads.. on a friend of mines lt1 t/a he made 397 @ the wheels on a mid 90 degree day with long tubes, bolt ons, those lt1 heads he ported and a comp cam..although the cam wasnt nearly as aggressive as a 847...which makes me smile
hehe...anywayThe vibe i seem to get from most everybody is a tune is straight money when it comes to bigger mods...i dont know how many guys i know that say their most important and loved mod was the tune, lol. Then again, i know guys with stock ls1s that saw 10-20 hp at the wheels, then some that didnt see anything, though i dont know any stock tuned lt1s. But as far as it goes with you running a more stout cam with stock tune..if i had to guess id say that isnt a good idea especially if you get hot and want a/c lol, but im not a car guru, i just go by my experience and what ive learned...and im still learning.
ALMOST FORGOT... Some info im not sure if i should divulge so imma say it like this...got a connection with some friends, of a professor at MIT he teaches cam theory, he can spec out a cam if you give him the info he requires from your car...and he will give you the stoutest cam with the most absolute gain physicaly possible for a cam WITHOUT TUNING...now this is for cars that dont wanna get tuned....my friend tried this guy with his ls1 t/a...well he has stock heads, this cam specd for his car, and bolt ons...and he made a lil over 380/380 at the wheels on high 80 degree day...and he can cut his a/c on with out a problem...and it sounds freaking amazing!
