LT1 cutting out and hesitating
I have a friend who's lt1 transam starts to hesitate and then the engine cuts off. We put a new opti spark and a new ignition module. The dam thing still wants to buck and jerk then after a few minutes the engine jsut dies. Can it be the ignition coil. We haven't replaced that yet. Its pulling a check engine light. I don't if It doesn't have any silent codes. It is a 95 where it is obd1 and the connector is obd2. I have autotap but that does me no good on his car.

doubt it. go to autozone and find out what the check engine light is. does it take a few minutes for the engine to start bucking and jerking or does it do it right away? id look at the O2 sensor first, thats why you need to have the code read.

How was this problem resloved? Mine just started doing the same damn thing tonight. Opti, ignition module, plugs & wires are relatively new. This one is a '93 though, so I don't think it has a MAS. Runs and idles fine until you try to accelerate , then it misses and cuts out. Oh, and there is no check engine light.

Nope, no headers. It's the wife's ride and she insists we keep the car 100% stock. The plug wires have been on there a year. I'm going to get a mirror and a bright light and see if any of them are getting cooked, but they are GM wires on all the factory wire looms, so it's doubtful.

Well I got it fixed, so I thought I would follow up here so others may benefit. After replacing both O2 sensors then the fuel filter, the problem ended up being the fuel pump. And replacing a fuel pump in an fbody is no fun, as most of you know. It only had about 12 psi of fuel presure, not the 42 psi or so it's supposed to be. I should have checked the fuel presure before I changed that other stuff.

i know you already fixed it, BUT wanted to know how many miles you had on your car..... before you changed the fuel pump. Mine is almost going to hit the 90K mark, wanted to see how many before I have to change the fuel pump

164,000 miles. But I'm sure it has not been operating at peak efficency for quite some time. It would cut out on occation, but we couldn't figure out what was causing it since the opti and ignition module had already been replaced. It finally got so bad the car wouldn't go over 20 mph. How humiliating for a proud Trans Am. I think if you measured the fuel presure from time to time, it would give you some advance warning of failure.

Damn you got a killer deal for $900, that's a beautiful LT1 car. That female must have thought these cars are shot after 100k miles; that couldn't be farther from the truth. I miked the cylinders for wear on my car at 145,000 miles, and they were very close to factory tolerances. Exhaust valves were a little pitted, but not that bad.
