Default F Body Engine Removal

undefinedJ=JUST PURCHASED A 95 FIREBIRD TO GO WITH THE WIFES 95 Z28,MOTOR HAS LOW COMPRESSION IN #5 AND # 7,HEAD GASKET IS NOT BLOWN,COMPRESSION INCREASES WITH OIL IN CYLINDER,PLUS LOTS OF BLOW BY.THINKING OF ENGINE REMOVAL,MY QUESTION IS CAN IT BE REMOVED FROM THE TOP,FACTORY SAYS BOTTOM .I AM A MOPAR MAN BUT THESE F BODY LT1'S ARE CHANGING MY OUTLOOK

Yes, it can be taken out the top, engine and trans. It really wasnt that difficult either probably took an hour once I had everything disconnected and removed like the rad., fans, manifolds, etc..

I did the same. Next time im going to try the bottom...it just looks to be easier overall. If you dont have the equiptment to do it from the bottom..you can do it from the top but it takes a lot more work I think.

I have pulled my engine out the top four times. Getting ready to do it again. Nice thing about coming out the top is you can leave the Hood,A/C,PS,Brakes and all that little stuff intact PLUS you can move the car around.

I DO pull the trans off the engine first but know people who leave it.

Once it is all loose you come up to the cowl then forward to the radiator support. next you twist the engine 90 degree's then finish coming up and out. Tie every thing off close the hood and push it out of the way

You are planning on taking an entire engine and transmission out and you are worried about removing the hood!?

engine and tranny can come out together if the hood gets taken off and the radiator, condenor, manifolds, and intake duct work and all connections and it comes out rather simply.

I must say it was a lot easier to do than I thought it would have been, I had some brackets made that piggy back the intake that I used for lifting.

This may be a dumb question and I think I already know the answer but Do you have to pull the motor out to change the motor mounts out?

I have helped a buddy with his Supra a few times, with an LT1 if you left the trans on, used air tools to take bolts off once their broken by hand tools, I could see getting an LT1 out from the top in about 4-6 hours with 2 people.

Its not recommended to take the engine out from the bottom unless you have a floor lift. Top should be easier.
