Default opti again??!

well, my 396 LT1 is acting up again.
we had it running fine on Saturday, but revved it up hard one time under load and it backfired really hard at 5300 and the car shut off. Now it woln't start. No spark to the cylinders... Any ideas on a cause?

I think I'm going to do the delteq coil pack conversion to fix this. Damn, that opti only had 40 miles on it too!

Just remember the coil packs DO NOT eliminate the Opti completely, It still relys on the Hi and Lo resolution of the opti,A friend of mine went this route and still had failures due to the resolution failer of the opti. I had numerious problems with the opticrap and finally went to the dynaspark, Never had an issue since.............

We have had a couple of Optisparks fail here on the dyno. The screws holding the rotor in place came loose. I tell people to never just take one out of the box & bolt it on, the rotor screws are almost never tight. I use red locktight on those. Have never had one fail. What are you guys usually seeing fail?

Default Opti

Mine was consistently shooting the pickup off the rotor through the opti like an arrow at 6500 RPM. I checked the pin length off the cam and it was good. I even pulled it out and put a little JB to make sure it was not walking in and out but still no luck. With the Dyna Spark everything has been ok so far..

Double check your coil if you have an ignition box. I still had spark but it was not enough for the opti.(would still shock the hell out of your friends)(probably the juice from the ignition box still making its way through) I wound up replacing the opti not knowing this and then still had the problem. Only to find out it was the coil. If you have a stock one sitting around test it in place of the other. 40 miles sounds fishy for the opti to be going out already, unless you got water in it from something.
I think your problem might be something like I had.

well, the coil is brand new (40 miles along with the opti, and control module) the MSD was not hooked up when this happened.

I'm leaning towards a problem with the rotor. Ed might be right on this one, I didn't check it and tighten everything before bolting it on... I'm also going to check the cam dowel with a micrometer to be sure of the length.

most common problems do acure coz of the Opti....

I'm afraid the only thing I have in mind is to buy any second-hand opti and try the run again! and see if it happens again.

ok, fixed it today. Car is running great again!

Bolts holding the rotor on inside the opti backed out (Thanks Ed Wright for the suggested problem) and the rotor cracked in half. New rotor, New Cap, and new wires just for good measure. It Lives!

And Duy, as soon as I get a new tune on this thing (tonight or tomarrow) I'll be game for running your "Real" 240.

Glad you fixed it. I think ACDelco must have a four old girl installing those rotors. I always use a thread locker on the screws.

Take care, Ed

Just take the cap off, and there are two screws holding the rotor on. I have never seen them come out of the box tight. Very small screws, so be careful. I use red locktite for everything. I've been shifting mine @ 7200 all year long, runs about that at the finish line, and it sees that in the water box way too often. Has been fine so far.

Good luck, Ed
