Default Took emissions test today, failed horribly.

Ok I took the damn emissions test with my 93 formula and it did terrible. It failed on everything except the gas cap test.

Hydrocarbons-needed a .80 mine was 23.5365
Carbon Monoxide-needed a 15.0 mine was 49.6354
NOx-needed a 2.0 mine was 3.075

I need a little help fixing this, I am very short on money so I cant really have a shop diagnose it for me. Yeah the back of the emissions report has "possible needed repairs" but it is very vague. The exhaust has a very strong fuel smell so it could be a fuel delivery problem. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

More details? Mods? Cats or not... judging by those readings, I would have to guess no. I passed the Nox test BARELY even when I had dual cat LTs.

Only mod is performance exhaust (not really sure what brand, looks like loudmouth but it has a muffler not a resonator). It has a cat on it. Dont know if its in working order though. Would I be better off buying a hi-flow cat and having it welded in or get the slp y-pipe with the cat installed?

you may try to check and clean your egr valve...it is responsible for keeping NOx down. Check your air(smog) pump and make sure that it is working and the hose is clear...could explain the high CO. Then just find out why you are running extremely rich. Many things can cause rich conditions.

OK now my car bearly starts when cold, it just keeps cranking. Could all this emissions stuff and starting problem be caused by the opti? I have to press the gas a little for it to start then it runs like **** till I warm it up by holding the gas pedal at about 2K rpm. It is wierd because it is still fast as hell when I slam the gas pedal. Any suggestions?

Where are you located???? If you can find someone local with a 93 scanning capability that go very far towards getting you fixed. Try checking on www.speeddensity.org if you can't find someone semi-local here.

How can you tell if your car is running too rich/lean w/o these sort of tests?

Well the car smells like a freakin weedeater from the exhaust. The fuel odor is very strong, plus gas mileage is terrible, so I assumed it was running rich.

To start the car (only after sitting for a long while) I have to give it gas. Then when it finally starts it runs shitty for about 10 seconds so I have to give it gas so it wont die. Then it idles fine and smooth. The problem has gotten worse since I bought it about 2 weeks ago, It seems like it started better with the old starter. Now with the new starter, it doesnt turn over without me giving it gas. I solved one problem only to create another I guess.

I removed the TB today and cleaned it to the best of my ability (to help emissions). Put it back in and the car and it fired right up after sitting for like 4 hours.Dont think the cleaning contributed to the good start but I'll try starting it in the morning and I'll see how it does.

Get it tuned. Pretty much only way to solve that inevitable problem.

There are a whole lot of things that could be causing this, I think you need to get the car scanned to see whats up. If you *have* to, a dealer should be able to, but I would check the regional section out to see if a member could help you out. You should be in luck since you are in proximity to St. Louis.

find out if you can buy your way off.. my friend had a 91 rs and he failed... then he proved he spent 250 after the test to help solve the problem and he now doesnt have to get it tested again. of course..your short on money so i guess thats out... if you get a new cat...weld bolt on flanges to it so that after the test you can take that restrictive piece off and have some performance...good luck

When was the last time you did basic maintenance, i.e. fuel filter, plugs, wires, pcv, air filter, O2's, etc.?

Well I just got the car but the things I have done are:

O2's
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Thermostat (old one was stuck open which is bad for emissions)
Oil and Oil Filter

I am doing the plugs and wires tomorrow, anybody have any tips for me. The hardest plug job I have done is a V8 F-150, I hope it is not as hard as those.

From what I've read, set aside a couple of hours to do it, most of the plugs will be easier to get to from under the car, and to change the plug wires, you will have to pull the alternator and move the powersteering pump.

Its about as hard as the F150, although I would assume it would be which V8 in the F150s.

The wires are a PITA.
