Default Dart 230's from LME

Just wanted to see if any one was running these. And what kind of setup you have.
Im leaning on these Dart 230's with the full port. Also the lt4 intake as well.
Let me know what kind of #'s you guy's are putting up and how you like them.

your having them converted to reverse flow cooling right? if so thats still fairly new. most of the people on this board have not gone "exotic" like that. there are some here that are familar with the SBC2 setup and i am sure they can help you. just have to be patient for them to come around.

These are built specifically for the LT1 (reverse flow from the factory) ? If so, LT1 guys are gonna go nutz on that head & flow.

no they are sbc heads converted for reverse cooling. so yes they will bolt right on, but only after being altered for the cooling passages. also the intake needs to be modded, or something fabbed up. but yes, they flow like a mother. need a big ol bumpstick for all that flow.

Umm, those are some pretty big heads. i don't think a street engine would need anything like that. They would love a huge cam, and lotsa compression tho.

I was just saying im getting my LT4 intake ported to match these heads also from LME. cost = $400
Heads Bare = $850 or so. then for reverse cool and porting will be $2250
Price quote from Brian at LME.
But the Bare heads im getting through a local dealer.
Prices are just the port job and reverse cooling. and also valves and whatnot.
Supposedly they flow 308cfm out of the box. and with the port 330-340cfm.

I am not trying to burst your bubble in anyway here, i doubt those heads flow 308 out of the box. I have 2 sets of Dart heads, the first was a set of Iron Eagles....they weren't that great....and more recently when building a 383...I went with some Dart Pro 1 215's. I didn't expect much out of the box from them, but they did claim to flow almost 280. Before they were ported they were flowed for some piece of mind....they flowed 260 or so at .700" lift. They did leave alot of room for improvement. I still think those heads are too big, I saw your sig...they are going on a 396....a 11.5:1, .650 lift 396. Thats not too radical, so I stand by the opinion that these heads are 2 big. What are your HP goals....what are your plans for the car...all necessary parts of choosing the right stuff for the car.

Ok...while you have a decent post Bigkap....these are not too much head, not even close. On a stroked motor with a decent sized bore (396) you need to flow 300+ even to get the thing to keep making power past 6200 or so. Also the flow number is just that, a number. It's more about port velocity. With a solid roller cam with a lot of duration heads that flow this well are necessary. If you think I'm pulling this out of my ***, go look at all the LS1 cars with ported LS6 heads flowing 310+ on stock bottom end cars with small (by comparison here) cams.

Your right i might be shooting alittle high on the flow #'s but who knows. According to dart's website they do flow 308 out of the box.

I am not saying that the head flow is too much in any way. Contrary to this, what I meant was that the runners are Too big. It would take a whole lot of engine to warrant the use of these Ported Dart 230's due to runner size. Port velocity has to with Minimum cross section of a runner, RPM range, etc. etc. Now granted Cubic inches do eat up port volume, but I still don't think a relatively mild 396 w/ 11.5:1 and a solid roller that only makes power to 7200( as far as the PCM can go)...will need a 230+ runner volume.

I def think a DFI or FAST setup will be needed, because this combo will keep making power well past 7K. Depending on how aggressive the cam winds up being closer to 8k sounds about right. I was actually thinking about that so thanks for bringing it up. While these heads may be on the large side for this particular N/A application, the upside is that is leaves room to grow for a good N20 shot. IMHO, these heads were originally designed for a 4XX+ ci sbc. Think motown blocks or filled and sleeved sbc's where this much head is an entry level and affordable option to the canted valve (15* or sb2.2) heads. That said, I don't forsee this combo losing HP/TQ under the curve and especially not peak numbers. I forsee a power band of about 4500-8K or so if everything is setup correctly. With the right converter this should be one nasty car on the street and one helluva performer on track days. One more thing of note asudecat, the LT4 intake will be your new bottleneck. It simply won't flow enough air for these heads and possible cam combo. If you have the funds I would look into a wilson manifold with a custom fabbed elbow, or a victor intake with a TBI on top. Then your setup would start to resemble N20daves (he made 700+hp btw, although he was using more compression, and sb2.2 heads). [rant off]

I am building a 383 LT1 with a T76 and I am using Lloyd Elliott ported LT4 AFR210's. I am also helping my boss with his 67 camaro 383 with a T74 turbo kit. He bought the Dart Pro 1 230cc heads as cast. He sent them to Lloyd Elliott to port, and here is the comparison between my heads and his...

.............Lloyd's AFR 210................Lloyd's Pro 1's
............Intake.....Exhaust..............Intake .....Exhaust
0.200......143........103....................142.. .......105
0.300......204........141....................199.. .......145
0.400......247........173....................248.. .......175
0.500......281........198....................281.. .......202
0.600......308........219....................302.. .......217
0.700......311........227....................317.. .......229

Just food for thought....we also paid ~ the same money for the heads, porting andn valvetrain.
