Default 3.42's Vs. 3.73's

I'm going to be getting gears as part of my setup, and I'm thinking of doing it after exhaust/headers and some suspension. The car is my daily driver and will be for ahwhile, and it will be taken to the track at least 3 times a year. Basically I just want to cut some time but not effect gas mileage incredibly. How many MPG would you lose from 3.23's to 3.43's or 3.73's? Any information would be helpful. By the way, I think I'm gonna get Richmond Gears at Jegs.com

ok, people can say this till they are blue in the face that 3.73's are the best gear for everything..... but it isnt. Its a pretty good over all dragstrip gear. Mind you when you cross the 1/4 traps you want to be at the peak of your powerband in 3rd gear. Thats what you want idealy.

The thing is most people who set up a nasty N/A car will benefit from that choice (3.73's), for the most part because most wont go beyond 130mph. But the thing is with cars that go beyond all motor applications and start talking BOOST/n2o. Those types of mods will make the car faster and should put it at a faster mph than it wwould in N/A trim.

So getting 3.42 will allow for more power and keep the car in 3rd longer, so you wont dump into overdrive.

I picked 3.42's for that reason alone, i make under 400 rwhp and im adding n20, i need the rpm so i dont drop into 4th.

I plan on adding a 100 or maybe a little 50 shot in the future, and would like to have a car that can do at least 150.

Good one Siphon, made me laugh.

if you want the car to go at least 150 than stop lookin at gears
gears are for acceleration not top speed
You might be able to hit 150 with some 3.42s but i doubt it

How many times tho are you actually gonna get up to 150? I topped my car out when I first got it on some back road outside of Daytona Beach, way to scary on shitty Z rated tires and stock suspension. But in all reality how many times a week are you gonna be going that fast? Go with the 3.42s good all around gears for drag racing and autocrossing.

FWIW....3.73's are the perfect gear for a stalled, 150shot bolt on a4. I know firsthand. Crosses the traps at right around 6k depending on 60'. 3.42's are good too, but not nearly worth the money to swap. Mileage wise...it depends how fast you go on the highway and how ofter you put your foot into it. GMHTP only lost 2-3mpg from their car grapes of wrath, which was an a4 lt1 with 3.42s up from 2.73's. BTW 150mph is about as useless as a one-legged man in an *** kicking contest.

Problem with the grape of wrath is that it had a wounded opti and they didnt fix it till the last installment and never got their 12 second run. When you look at say when they did gears, they didnt gain either. It was definitly one of the stories they should have done over again. As for the 150mph being useless, talk to a supra guy, they start their races from 90 mph rolls

My car can hit 150 now without a problem, I'm just saying after gears I want to still be able to get there. But I think I'm gonna go with the 3.43's, because of streetability and gas mileage.

Sorry but that's just plain wrong.

www.f-body.org/gears

You could hit 150 no problem even with 3.73s.

Right...well if you want to take a supra from a 90 roll your a4 isnt going to cut it anyways if you are going up to 150. The setup on that car was all wrong obviously...shorties, small stall, pig heavy, etc etc. Anyways....go ahead and go with 3.42's. I just like the taller gears.

Yeah 3.73's are the ultimate espically in the 1/4... but I'm worried about gas mileage considering it is my daily driver. And I only plan to get this car to about 400 HP.

I have 3.73's in my daily driver........ I don't mind them. Gas mileage isn't great but isn't HORRIBLE at the same time. I'm sure the mileage is going to suck after i put everything else on but who knows......... i don't really mind shitty gas mileage though.

I do... I'm poor until I get out of College lol. I just don't want to go with 3.73's and regret it, I will get the 3.42 gears and see how I like them, if I don't I can always step them up.
