Default first day at the track this friday

I was invited to go to the track with some other people from University of Maryland this friday. I have never drag raced before. Does anyone have any advice for a first time track goer?

watch the racing for a little bit before you get in the staging lanes
pay attention too how the lights work on the tree, pay attention too how the workers run the cars thru the burnout box
get too know where the 1st set of staging lights turn on

drive around the burnout box and back up into it too keep water off the front tires
street tires, just do a small burnout to clean the tires off
go out the night before on a desolate road and find out if your car feels better launching from idle or brake torquing it a little bit
EDIT; i see you have an M6, do you know how too do a burnout in it?
you'll need too vary the launch rpm's too find out where the car likes it so it wont bog down or just spin the tires at the launch

and if you leave the line when the green light is lit up, you are too late
basically, its a fine line between the 3 yellow and the green light. usually its bets to get into it as soon as you see that 3rd (last) yellow light up

ask other people that are there questions

I do not know how to do a burnout. I'm not even sure I know how to launch.

Burnout is real easy. Just rev it up, pop the clutch, then as soon as you jump off the clutch, stand on the brake so that you don't move forward. You could get a line lock which is a switch you flip that locks the brakes on the front wheels only. Then the back wheels are free to spin.

BTW are you guys going to capitol or MIR?

Here's a few pointers

1. Don't get in the water box if you have regular street tires, water gets trapped in between the treads and that will make you spin terribly coming off the line and **** off the track workers because they will have to dry off the launch area. Just lightly clean off the tires if they are regular street tires.

2. When staging up turn on the top staging light then wait for the other guy to turn his top light on then ease forward to turn yer second stage light on. Turning on both yer lights starts a timer and doesn't leave the other guy long to stage up before the tree comes down, it's a courtesy thing.

3. Gotta figure out where yer car will launch best, you want a lil wheel spin with the M6 but not alot, like maybe a couple revolutions. It takes practice. No spin bogs it and yer 60 ft will be shitty. If you do spin real bad on the launch let off the gas! Don't smoke the tires all the way thru first. lol

4. When yer staged and waiting for the lights to come down hold yer rpm steadily where you want it. Watch the lights as they start down, I'd say when you see the second light go out sidestep the clutch then nail it.

Watch and talk to experienced racers, you can learn alot from them. Hope that helps some.

I've never had a problem with the timer. There have been guys that take FOREVER to stage up while I have my 2 lights up, and they took all the time in the world and nothing happened. I do some burnouts in street tires to clean them off, though the BFG KDWS I have are better than the stock Goodyears.

The track must not have the auto timer on then, or they don't have one at all.

The timer doesn't start until both cars have prestaged and one car has lit up both lights. If you have both lights lit up and the other car has not lit up any the timer doesn't start.

This is correct, I misunderstood what blink said. You have 7 seconds to stage after both are prestaged and one is completely staged. If you just turn one on then wait for the other guy to turn his top light on then you both turn on yer second light at the same time giving you both equal time to stage. 7 seconds isn't alot of time when yer barely trying to bump the second light on. Hope all that doesn't confuse you. lol
