I say go for it, Its the Opti SPARK thats probly making the car bog down. Plugs, wires, exhaust leak etc and its sounds like it needs just a ton of basic repairs.
Maybe you can get some parts cheaper becasue your friends own this dealer ship and have a hook up on parts.

lol... did you not read the thing about the alternater? Dead battery... alternater that isn't charging.... that equals no spark... which equals missing.
This is what my diagonose is. My buddy (the mechanic) is being a *** and says "i'll get the alternater, i aint poutting it in though"... i dont know why. It will be fvcking easy. Right on top of the damn motor

Yea i guess, u need to carfax it too, how many owners....stuff like that. If it was me i would do it tho, its A V8 you usualy cant go wrong. The opti is a pain, make sure if you do change it get a 95' opti them ***** is the best. Ur going to have to put some cash in her to make her run good. And if the owners before did not do oil changes on time every time your probly going to feel it now. Best of Luck man, honestly!

How do 93's have the worst Opti spark, and no they don't go out every 30k miles. You have a non vented Opti spark which is better than the vented because it's easy to get them wet.

If it was me I would do it. Do some research on the opti, it might be a good idea to convert it to the vented opti style. Will cost more at first, but if the vented goes bad its about a hundred cheaper than the nonvented style. You mentioned putting a cam in, becareful and monitor your oil pressure before you do this. I have a cam but did not put it in because ive got about 150k on the clock with a kinda low oil pressure, and read/heard horror stories of cam swaps and within 50 miles spinning a bearing (sometimes on lower mileage engines, could be coincidence/install error or mechanical, do some searching). Look at the oil and notice the color, if coolant is in the oil its a ticking bomb.
Personally, i would get it, put your ls1 in it (assuming youve got all the parts), save a couple bucks and rebuild the lt1 and slap that in the s10, but thats just me. Do what you want, after all it is your money, and good luck.
P.S, talk to some people that own ones around you, and try to talk to some really experienced people on here too.

lol, opti sparks are hard to put on... it's not on top of the motor... try near the pullies... and the opti spark differs in year... it just does... dowel pin and etc. do some research... but yeah... it sounds like my car when i first got it... i also paid around 2K .. now it's a sexy lightly modded beast that romp stock LS1's all night.

If I were you I wouldn't buy it. It may only be 2k but it still sounds like a money trap. I also love my 93, I Specifically wanted a 93 for the better flowing intake. speed density etc. The only think I don't like is the yellow gauges but those can be replaced. I also love mine because it's a hardtop, t-tops are cool but I don't want to worry about them espically when your running high hp.
You have to have pretty shitty luck if your opti goes out every 30k, it's a poor design but my 93 Z28 has 91k on it and the opti has never been replaced knock on wood. And my friend has a 94 Z28 with 160k on the original opti... also knock on wood. If you do have to replace it I second going with the vented opti.

I love my 93, I think they are the best year. The optis are not that bad. My first one lasted over 110k miles. The only changed it when the 383 went in. It was actually still working. I've got 10k miles on this one with no problems.
If you want alot of 93 specific info....try looking at www.speeddensity.org

I wouldn't get it. I looked around for months before I got my TA. I only had about $3,500 to spend. The cars I found we always above 100K miles. I test drove a 1993 Camaro with 150K miles and it was horrible. I felt that my brother's Integra would destroy me. At that high of mileage, the engine is crap. Luckly my grandparents offered a lot of money and I bout a 94 TA with 58K miles on it for $7,000 (PERFECT BODY AND ENGINE). But besides my car, the car your looking at sounds crappy. Just remember, you don't have to buy the first car you find, their are better ones out there, TRUST ME. Only think about buying it if you know a lot about cars and can restore it. Good luck.

Not to mention all the other BS you are feeding this guy in this thread. Opti's do NOT go out every 30K miles. You got hosed if you paid 1300 for yours.
The Vented opti is preferred over the non vented. Its not that water gets in through the vent as someone said, its that ozone and humidity can get OUT of the opti.
FWIW to the original Poster, the car sounds like a pile. I'd stay away. High mileage, probably no basic maintenance ever, sounds like a bad opti. Guages dont work?

I'd walk away unless you can do the work yourself. By the time you have the bodywork and paint done, have it running good, and get everything fixed, you could have bought a nicer car in the end, with a lot less miles.
You can find a nice lt1 for 4 grand with at least half the miles of that one, and in better shape.
I paid $3150 for my 96 formula convertible, just turned over 100k, it needs a top, and the paint is faded but thats it. It runs great, and I can do the all the work myself. Thats what will cost you, paying shops to do it....
