Default A new crank kit...

Well, I found out that the bearing was bad and now I need a new crank kit. So, I guess that basically means I need to rebuild the motor. (great... ) Well, the guy told me he can do one of two things. Either fix it without getting a new crank, but it will break soon. (basically make it run good for a while) Or, do the whole job. Getting everything done will cost 1750. Do you guys think that is a bad deal? I mean, he does have to pull the motor and it is a big job...What should I do here? I'm going to decide on it tomorrow. Since he is doing all this work, wouldn't it be wise to get a cam? I was thinking he could just put it in with no extra labor, or am I wrong? How much are cams? Anyone selling one, where can I get it? (I need it kind of quick) Although, if I get the cam I don't want more problems. If anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I know i'm having all these problems now, but hopefully the car will run really good when it's all over with...

why do you need a new crank? you can have it turned and get oversize bearings.

Yeah...I think you're getting ripped big time. Go to another shop. You need your bearings replaced, crank turned, and install time. If its 1750 somewhere else, try to do it yourself. You can get a NEW shortblock for 1750. Also the cam will require new springs, retainers, locks at a minimum, maybe new pushrods and lifters also.

Well, my timing chain broke and it bent valves. After I got that fixed (by another mechanic) I started hearing a ticking after I got an oil change. I took it to the same mechanic that did the valve job and he said it sounded like a bad bearing. I took it to another mechanic (this mechanic was recomended to me by the guy who changed my oil) and he took it apart and said my bearing is all screwed up. Also, he said if I would have drove on it any longer, I could have ended with a piston through my oil pan. He said something like that...He isn't going to start on the work until I give him the word. He explained to me how it happened and he doesn't sound like he is full of crap or anything.

You guys freaking kill me! Maybe Barny the pruple freak will do it for two bucks but everyone else is going to charge money. Just how it is in life. SO you can buy a reman short block for that much. It isn't installing it self!

$1,700 does not sound that bad at all.

I think what you should do is sit down with the guy and tell him what you realy want out of the motor and see where he comes in. Maybe a reman short block from a good vendor is the way to go for you and he can install it. The only thing holding you back will be cash flow Sit down with him and TELL HIM what you want Out of all the advise you will get here, even from me, the guy you are working with is the only one who can give you the answers you NEED to hear

Good luck!

Why do some of you think I should get another motor. Chances are it would produce less hp and just makes things harder...The hardest thing about this job is just getting to the tight spots. The cars are hard to work on from what I understand.

Never said you needed a new engine. It MIGHT be the best choice. Like I said only you and your mechanic can decide that.

BTW most times when you spin an bearing a rebiuld IS in order You are going to have it apart any ways might as well freashen it all up

Hey if you think 1700 bucks is ok to do a bearing job, pull the motor and reinstall it, feel free to pay it. All I'm saying is that a 2 of my friends and I with moderate mechanical skill pulled and reinstalled a motor. Saves a lot of money and really isnt that difficult, just scary. Then if you want to have a mild rebuild you can haul it to the shop and be charged way less overall. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't drop 1700 for that. Just like when the transmission guy I went to to look at my 6 speed that needed a rebuild, he said 1000 for parts installation, and removing the tranny itself. I was a little wary, ordeded the parts I needed, rebuilt it with my dad for under 500. Just depends on what you want to do. Throwing out my .02.

What kind of motor could I get that puts out over 275hp? I mean, I wouldn't want to get something that would be slower than the LT1...Shouldn't my car basically run like new after getting all this done anyway? I just got a valve job and new pushrods and now this...

0wner, why dont you take that 1750 and put it towards a stroker or a Forged 355, something that you know wont break next week. Your chain of shitty events will soon come to an end like i said.

I don't know what to do. I don't really want to spend more than that, unless I'm getting a lot more than what my car already was. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should exactly do. This way I can just tell the guy and do it. What is the best route to take? This is going to be an everyday driver that I will race every now and then. I may take it to the track to see what it runs, but I'm not going to get really into it. I may race a bit on the streets, but I'm not going to the track every weekend...

It's not like I can drive my car around. I would have to explain to them the situation and they would need to give me an idea. Most places want to "see" the vehicle. I don't I could find a place to do it for under 1700. It's basically a rebuild. One guy said 3000...Wow is all I can say about that.

I thought It was a fair price for all the work. It just sucks all this happend at the same time. I mean geez...Anyway, If I decide to go with a cam what all do I need to get? What kind of cam and what else would I need? About how much more would I be spending and would it make a big improvement to my car? (HP wise) I have bolt ons on the car now. (uncluding coated LT Headers)

A cam would be a wise choice. not knowing your ehtire combo I will give the basics I would run with a cam.

cam
chromemoly push rods
roller rockers
valve springs and retainers

The best bang for the buck would be the hot cam kit. Around $500 most places and comes with every thing needed except the puch rods, some say not needed, I dissagree. May not be the very best cam in the world but for the price It is hard to pass up. I have seen it make some very good HP.

What do you mean by very good HP? Around how much would you say? 20Rwhp? I don't know to much about cams, which is why I'm so curious. I want to make sure that it's worth the money. I current have a moroso CAI, Underdrive pulleys, Coated LT Headers, Matching Y-pipe, LT4 KM, descreened MAF, (which wasn't necessary) and a 160' thermostat.

Also, where can I get the cam quickly? I want to get my car back as soon as possible. Do you think automotive engineering would have it? I'm located in tampa florida area. I don't think I mentioned it, but I have a 94 A4 Z28. (I thought that would be helpful)

Well, I found out that I "spun" a bearing. That was the problem and I should get a crank kit. I asked him about a cam and he said that is by the timing chain and it would be hard to get there. It would be more money and I would have to get other things as well. (not just a cam) I already knew this, but I didn't realize I would get charges more labor. So, I'm not going to go with the cam. I talked to him about what I could do and he said there really wasn't much I could do without spending some money. He said he could set me up with some nitrous. But, I don't really want to do that. He is going to make sure I get a high volume oil pump. That is pretty much the only reasonable upgrade I can do...Any other suggestions? This guy seems to know a lot.

A high volume oil pump is NOT needed, nor is it an upgrade.
