i have BUILT a 10 bolt using a eaton carrier unit. This was in my s10 xtreme though after i blew my stock rear at 10k miles and gm refused to cover it due to the truck being 2" lower.

If you can get the internals set up right and then brace the **** out of the tubes so that nothing would flex, I think you could build a stronger 10 bolt. It would help if there was a spool but not for the axle spline count that is stock, so if you wanted to buy new axles with the (I think it's) 26 spline count there is a spool available.
I know of a guy that is running 4.33s in the 10bolt in a manual car/slicks/spray and it lasted but eventually the posi went out.
It's how much you want to spend!?!? But dont think any other rear end out there is unbreakable, they all have a weak spot.

I have two problems just spending the money on a 12 bolt or 9 inch.
One is my car already weights 3660 with me{I'm 195} in it and no stereo system. So putting the larger rear end is just going to weigh the car down.
Two, because the the stronger rear ends have larger rotating mass inside them I will lose power threw them. The car is a daily driver and most I should say all the races I get in are from a roll but I like taking it to the track. I care more about my mph then my time at the track because from a roll ET don't mean BEEP!
I understand eaton has a mean diff.{rebuildable} and strange makes bad *** axles. As for the gears breaking I sure I could find someone to cryogential freeze the gear to strenghten them. For alot less them $2300{strange 12 bolt} plus shipping.

Uhhh... You do realize that by keeping the 10 bolt, you will undoubtedly break it and then won't be able to find out your trap speeds since it wont... move? If anything, get a 12 bolt/9 inch and suffer a bit of parasitical loss, but now it will be strong enough to last, so put some tall gears and slicks on it and pop a wheel down your street

I have a good friend who bought a car from SW{elite motorsports}. It was a a 95 z28 sent to MTI and built. The car had a 396 and 275 shot full weight with a stock rearend 3.73's auburn and axles. The car made 448/480 na and 660/822 sprayed. On a et street leaving about 2500 rpm it went a 11.7/120 na and a 10.3 at 142. The car has been beaten on for the last 5 years and the rearend finally took a dive when the new owner put a slick on it and dumped the clutch at 6k. I am just weighing my opinions. I don't mind leaving easy and getting on it once I am moving. Just wondering if the 10 bolt built would handle that? My freinds car is just one car and I like to see a few that have survived in street cars.

Theres a guy around here who "Claimed" to still run the stock 2.73 gears in his 10 bolt. I know he had a 10 bolt but really unsure if he ever swaped the geras out or if they trully were the stock pieces. His car was a ls1 on spray in the 10's The 2.73 are thicker then 3.23's and 3.42 so i guess they would be stronger. But hey who knows...

I run with a Auburn pro chunk and 4.10 gears. I have been running a 10 bolt for years and have only broken two carriers (along with two sets of gears) that were welded together. Switched to the Auburn unit and have been running it for a year with no problems to date.
