WEll i got a 96 Trans Am yesterday. Im really happy.
THe motor is brand new and probly has anywhere from 200-300 miles on it. So im TRYING to keep out of it (though im not doing the best job). There is a 5 year/100,000 mile warrenty on the motor also.
I was curious on what you guys have for oil pressure at idle in drive at a stop. I know my old s10 was like 23 (in nuetral) and this car is like 20 MAYBE (less even, but this is in gear at a stop).... so that makes me worry. Though the oil pressure flys up as soon as the RPMs raise. The gauge bounces around a bit sometimes though, so im not sure how accurate it really is.
My other questions is how is a person supposed to really break a motor in? Take it easy for 500-1000 miles? I mean, i only have broke in 2-stroke motorcycle motors. So im not sure what is totaly correct for the car break in.
Thanks,
Nick

alright..thanks guys... i just wanted to know on that oil pressure...
as for being nice to it... i think i may take a 300 mile road trip this weekend... then drive it all week... and i hope that will get it broke in pretty well. Its hard to stay out of it.. But after last night i should have got the need to burn out.. out of me. it probly has 200-350 miles on the motor as of now... i put 150 on it in the last 24 hours...
THanks again,
Nick

ok... another question.... does anyone elses car run hot if you are at a stop?
I mean when im cruising down the road it runs real cool. But the second i stop i can start to watch the temp go up.

That oil pressure seems really low for a NEW motor. Mine is at 40-50 at idle and in gear. You will normally see the lower pressure on a motor with a lot of miles. You might have a flakey Oil pressure sending unit. However, GM says that something like 7psi per 1000 rpms is acceptable.
Also, what are you heating up to at idle? You might have air in the system or maybe you have a bad thermostat. You might want to get a 160degree thermostat anyways because the car will perform better with it.

i heard that long road trips are not good for new engines and that you should vairy the rpms for a while. could be a wise tale tho.
