my cat got gutted by a faulty msd box... it killed the spark and the car kept firing the injectors until the cat was cherry red, 2 days later i was shooting chunks through my exhaust.

yeah it should cause the gutted cat acts like a resonator. basically gutting the cat gets you a loudmouth. all the loudmouth has is a resonator. basically a larger pipe in which sound can resonate off of and cancel out.

instead of ruining a rather expensive catlytic converter, i would just put a straight pipe in there, and sell the working cat to make some cash.

nah, u could just get to flanged ends, clamp them on opposite sides of your cat and but a straight pipe in between, or just get a 30 dollar cut out and put it in front of your cat.

i will try to make a recording of mine when i get the chance but i want to put my short tube headers on first because there is a exhaust leak in the manifolds and i want it fixed

its not backfiring. its just popping. most exhausts do that while down shifting.

Well its not to bad. the vert im working on can be driven all year round. it isnt as cold as people think today at about 3 o'clock it was 44 degrees while i was working outside.

i just took this pic today around 3 or 4 (sorry for stealing the thread)

but about the cat. i have heard that gutting cats can have a negative effect on the flow of the air in the exhaust and a pipe is prefered

i have noticed.. on SOME vehicles it is caused by the hot air hitting the cool air.. that is what makes the popping. But then other vehicles have super long exhaust and it still does it. If we put a full exhaust... with heads... and X pipe (dual exhaust...), then each pipe havign a muffler, it doesn't pop.

I have heard a couple explinations why exhaust pops... but no one has given me a clear andswer

it doesn't effect flow any more than a muffler does. A gutted cat will flow better than your muffler. But infact. you cat aint much of a restriction point at all in the first place. Only point in removing it is sound, or your doing a full performance build where as a cat is pointless cuz your redoing the entire exhaust anyways. BUt really, peopel take it out just for a louder exhaust note.

It wont affect flow, so the pipe WIL flow better than a gutted cat, but not enough for ANYONE to notice. ITs all about the sound
