Is your engine stock? If so stock ones would work fine. I would use Mr. Gasket 5716's. They are a very good gasket, like $35 for the pair. These are thinner than stock and will boost the compression alittle as well.

I would second the Mr. gasket recommendation but add you might check with the mechanic and ask if he is planning on having the heads resurfaced I would recommend this anytime a head gasket fails as it might be the reason for the failure was a slightly warped head.
$1600 is a lot BUT you are in CA and this is a BIG project we are recommending a cheaper gasket which will help, if his figures include having the heads sent to a machineshop then consider that in the price. I bet book on this is over 10 hours also check what extra parts and fluids he is including. You need a full picture of what is included before you can compare and then again consider labor will be VERY high where you are.

You could just save yourself a lot of money and do it yourself. Its really not that hard.

I agree with what was stated here. If your not sure its the headgasket, do yourself a favor and get a second opinion on the problem.

Even better is get a gasket from the iron head Impala SS LT1. I heard the they were thinner therefore increasing compression. Not sure of the validity of this claim but thats what I use on mine.

Thats another good option. They are .029" thickness compressed, and more expensive than the Mr.Gaskets which are .026" compressed.

What is the compressed thickness of the Mr gaskets? The Impala gasket is .029" compressed. FelPro is thinner than the factory F & Y body gasket, but thicker than the Impala. (.036" or .038" I think) If you have .005" or more deck clearance (factory stock LT1s all do) I would use the Impala gasket.

Good luck, Ed

Good to know. Need to be at least .006" down for those.

Thanks for the info, Ed

Both of these gaskets (impala & Mr. Gasket) are made for iron headed motors. There must be a reason why manufacturers are making different ones for aluminium heads. Yeah, it might be the different expansion rates between the 2 metals and the allawance of this movement over the gasket surface or could be something related with corrosion.

The Impala gaskets (and I'm sure Mr. Gasket also) work fine with aluminium heads. Many people have used them for many years. I've used the Impala gaskets on mine for quite a while. It's a pretty common practice.

Yes, it would be easier and better to control the quench distance by using a thinner head gasket instead of decking the block.
