Default Cutout location

I see most people put the cutout before the axle. But wouldn't it make more power closer to the engine?

to cut down on the in car sound (trust me it will be loud), I would install it before the axel.

correct tuned RPM tells us that you will gain the most for the high RPM window by placing the cut out about 30 inches from the end of the Y pipe. Closer to the motor will shift the tuned RPM window.

I have two 3" electric cut-outs about 14" from the header collectors, so it's pretty much open headers when I flip the switch. I pick up about 10rwhp and 10rwtq from 2700 rpms until redline (6700) when the cut-outs are open. Not as much of a increase as I had hoped for, BUT THE SOUND...

It depend on what you are going for and you motor setup. The closer to the motor will give you more hp but may hurt your torque. Remember you are running a EFI ca not a carb car. In the old days they would un cap the exhaust at the headers and get big gains. Bt there a carb motor lacks lower in torque so they would have alot of stall or gear from hell. They did not have to worry about taking off with 4.56's out back. The further back you put it the more torque you will make and the hp will be lower. If you have ported heads, cam or even a stroker I would stay put it up front because the power and torque have already been moved up and you are tring to get it to breathe up in the higher rpm. But a stock cammed motor with stock heads I would put it in the back becuase you will not lose that low end and you will get the gain of open exhaust. THAT IS JUST MY TWO CENTS.

I have mine just before the rear end and know matter where you put it, it is loud.

For the minimal amount of power that you would gain, just put it before/after the axle to save yourself the headaches... because trust me, right now you're saying you only want it for the track... but when you see that group of ricers at the mall... well, you get the picture

I like mine just before the muffler, where it's easier to get to. I've had one at both locations and prefer this one. Your only probably talking about .35 hp difference between the two locations anyway.

I am leaning towards putting my cutout in the intermediate pipe just before the axle (to help with ground clearance). How many people put it there? I will be using a electric cutout so I won't have to get to it to unbolt it and can use it "on the fly" to drown out ricers .

I'm not sure how you will gain ground clearance that way? You are more likely to hit it if it's on the I pipe, rather than just before the muffler. If you put it in the back location, you'd crush your muffler before you even touched the cutout.

Guess I need to clarify.... on the i-pipe just before it goes into the muffler like Texas TA's and what you have described about yours Redneck Z (behind the axle, towards the rear of the car instead of under the car).

O.K. gotcha, I understand now. The location you are describing isn't the I pipe, it's on the "over the axle" pipe. The intermediate pipe is the staight pipe that joins with the "over the axle" pipe, just before the axle. That's what threw me off.
