Default Head Choices?

Just wondering your all's oppionion on aftermarket heads for a stock bottom end LT1. (minus cam of course) But if you were to spend around $1000 or so would you guys lean towards LE's stage 2 heads or something like an AFR or Trick Flow?

You're not going to get any AFRs for around $1000. Hell, I paid $1100 for some BARE CASTING AFR 210s. I would look into an LE1 or LE2 setup. An LE1 will only run you around $1100 with the cam.

Yea, I know AFR's are fairly expensive, but you can run across them used for a half way decent price....I have stock ported heads as it is, but I was looking to buy something a little better. To exclude price tag out of it, what seems to be the best head to buy?

AFR's, if price doesn't bother you. Trick Flow heads at $1,300.00 are a really good buy, and you don't have to wait three months to get them. We are currently putting together two LT1 engines using the Trick Flow heads. Bob

Do you have any flow numbers for the Trick Flows? I couldn't find anything on their site.

Hmm.. The engine in question, a 396, is making 412WHP with crappy headers, moderate cam of unknown specs and ported stock iron (!) heads. I don't think the TFS parts would do much more than lighten the front end with those flow numbers...

Put them in the hands of some good head porters and 300cfm ain't hard. Then they will help.

Bill it's B R E to the T.... I know you and my father are real close in years, but if I recal the orginal Bret Maverick (James Gardner) spelled it the right way too ;-)

Bret[/QUOTE]

I had a guy do them locally and he put them on a flow bench, but I don't remember what the #'s were. For the price, the port job was well worth it. I'm out of Ashland, ky and the guy has his own business (PTI) and he used to work for Performance Eng. in down town Ashland. Does really good work.

As far as how good they are? They helped out quite a bit, compared to stockers. Accoring to tuner cats, the mass air was reading 330gps, with ported heads/hot cam/LT's/CAI/58mm TB/ and 30lbs injectors. My buddies car with similar mods (with sock heads) were around 300 odd sum GPS.

I am topping 320gps with the Caprice in my sig, cam smaller than 99% of f-body guys would even consider and stock iron heads, this is maxing out the stock injectors still in the car, O2s look good to that point at which point it goes lean, which confirms these are good readings and not a funky sensor overreading. If the sensor was overreporting it would be rich.

Is that possible with the reverse cooling? I'm sure it is possible, but wouldn't you have to change alot to make that work other than just the heads themselves?
