Default gear selection

i have a 96 formula with a turbo 400 with a b&m 4500 stall and a moser 12 bolt with 4.30 gears.im wanting to go with a little less gear but i dont want to go too much.the 60ft times are great but driving down the highway at 55 at 3500rpms sucks.i was just wondering if anyone was running a similar setup and what gears you have and how they act.thanks for any help.

I use 3:73 gears since I have an automatic, but if I had a 6 speed, then I would use 4:10s. If you use this car a lot on the highway, then 4:30 gears are insane. Not only are you using a ton more fuel, you are shortening the engine life with the constant higher RPMs. If you want to use similar gears, then go with 4:10s, but with my 3:73s, I do approximately 2000 RPMs or so at 70mph. Even with 4:10s, you are still going to have high RPMs, especially since you have an automatic tranny without overdrive. Just my $.02

or if you have the money by a gear vendors unit, for the turbo 400, and you will save the tranny, engine and gas....

i think its gearvendors.com
but not sure, or google it

What are your trap speeds? I have a set of 4.30's in the box and currently running 3.23's on an a4, just curious what kind of 3rd gear top speed I will have.

http://www.f-body.org/gears

Should be around 100mph at the end of 3rd gear depending on your shift point and tire size.

What size tire are you running? I'd stick a little taller tire under it before I swapped gear sets. Just going from a set of 26's to 28's would knock thast gear to about a 4:10

well why are you really worried about highway driving, with that kind of stall and tranny seems to me as if its just a track car. just what i was thinking though.
