Tranny question, but mated to a 396 LT4...
I've got a few questions for you guys, and hopefully you can help me, cause i've gotten no answers anywhere else.
Like the title says, i've got a 396 LT4 setup, that will be going into my 95' Firebird in a couple of weeks, and I need to know what my tranny needs to handle this power? It's a stock t56 with just a short throw shifter. I'll need it to handle roughly 600 ft/lbs, and have been told a couple of things that need to be done.
I want to keep the 6-speed, which is why i'm not going with a different tranny. I've heard I need some billet keys, steel shift forks, maybe new synchrodes. I've also heard that my tranny just needs to handle what my clutch can't, per say that is. I'll be using a spec stage III with it, and behind it will be an aluminium driveshaft with a 9 inch rear, so I won't have to worry about the stock 10-bolt.
Does anyone know what needs to be done to a stock t56 to make it able to handle this much power?

Be prepared to spend big bucks. High HP t56s are not cheap. Its not just replacing a few parts. You will have to have a full rebuild. I recommend selling your t56 and using the money for a th350 or th400 swap.

I would sell it and get a different transmission, if it was only a 6-speed as well. I go without it, cause this won't be a straight drag car. It's going to be my weekend car, when I feel like getting out and cruising around.

Good luck man. I hope your **** holds up. Im in the same boat as you except for the fact that im keeping a totally stock A4 tranny (except converter) and hoping it doesnt blow up when the 383 goes in. I dont have enough to touch the tranny till next year.

i say if its not brook now then dont mess with it i have a LT4 396 in my 95z with a 200 shot and it has held up so far just fine, but if it dose go out then give the guys at T56 rebuild a call they will hook you up and offer free shipping i am pulling my tranny this sunday from my 2000 TA so they can rebuild it.
also i say no matter what anyone else says about a clutch selection just go ahead and get a Ram HD man they are freakin awsome.

I would put a good clutch in front of it and see how she handles it. The longevity of the unit will depend on your driving style. I have seen 800hp turbo guy have there T56 last forever and stock 350 guys tear them up on a weekly basis.
NOTHING is un-breakable
BTW It goes the same with Clutch's. I have seen them ram last any where from years to less then a singal pass Only Clutch I have seen take it all and come back for more in the Street twin

baby the **** out of it.. i know you have an lt1 and mine was in a 99 ta but all i had done was k&n fipk and loudmouth and it was slippin around 80k and done at 106k... the tranny would rev from 1500rpm - 3k before catching.. so on the highway id let off the gas and it would drop to 1500, id lose speed, then barely touch it and it would go to 3k... not to mention i had to let off the gas everytime i wanted it to shift... and if you floored it, it slipped all the way to the rev limiter.. sometimes trying to merge on the highway id step on it to much and it just shot up.. i dont know if the 4l60e's were the same in lt1s but they all suck in stock form.. HOWEVER, check out maddogtransmissions.com.. the people there are very helpful and theyre prices are low but i know a guy who has one (the godfather) <--- name of the tranny, youll see when you go there... and hes got h/c 150 shot over 600 at the wheels with the juice and it works great.. they back all their products
