Default Porting

While I have my heads (stock) off of my lt1 I was thinking of port matching the heads with the intake. (just where the head bolts up to the intake).

How hard is this to do?

(do any water jackets run near the ports? if so where? Problem areas?)

What is this worth in terms of hp/tq increase?

Do I port the ports the same width and height all the way in or only part way?

The guide I looked at made it seem really easy as long as you go slow and take your time. I have some experience working metal as well as the help of an engineer on my side so I am not going into this blind and I AM fully aware of the consequences if I screw up.

I would love some advice from anyone who has done this before. Even if it is only like 15hp I still want to do it but only post #'s if it is an EDUCATED guess not just a made up figure.

Thanks guys. Any other head porting advice is appreciated as well. Links are also appreciated!

I did this to my stock heads when I had them off. I have not got it running since, so I dont know how much HP will come of it. I justed layed the gasket on the head, and scratch marked to the edge of the gasket. Then I used a dremel and grinded down to the mark. Then I used fine gritted sand paper polisher and went over it for a final time. I still had room to go more, but I didn't considering I didnt know how far I could go without grinding into a water jacket... It turned out smooth and shiney, and I am also interested to know what kind of gains one has gotten from doing this.

hey Pontiacfire TAWS6 can you take some pictures of your heads? So you did port match (take out the material in the scratched off gasket area entirely)?

By not taking out more do you mean go beyond the gasket scratches? How far into the port did you go and was it the same diameter all the way in?

Did you do any other porting to the heads or just the gasket matching? Did you port the intake as well? Why isn't your car working (not due to the head port I hope)?

thanks!!

I cannot get pictures of my heads, because the heads are back on the motor. I went to the scratch marks and tried to get it the same diameter all the way down (as far as I could). I then layed the gasket on the intake and scratched marked and did the same thing, so the heads and intake will be matched. I also rounded off the top a little so the edge wasn;t like a razor, I dont know if that was helpful or hurtful. The car is not running yet because I just installed a cam, and relocating the battery, and new optispark, ect. ect. ect. Haven't gotten the opportunity to fire it up yet.
