LT4 conversion kit
Anyone know were i can get a good lt4 conversion kit.. i need some good mods because my car is basically stock.. anyone runnin this kit out there that can tell me wat kind of power ill be expecting after its all done.. also is there anything to know about the lt4 hotcam that comes with it.. i heard mixed reviews about it
BTW.. do u think this is enough to beat a basically stock 04 WRX sti... The conversion kit, a 3400 rpm stall, some 3.42's exhaust, intake...

It is not worth it for what you get. The heads are not well suited to a stock displacement motor and you need a fair amount of other mods before you begin looking at heads and cam.
The ONLY reason for the popularity of those parts is people such as yourself who see it in magazines and catalogue and then buy it without research, at least you are smart enough to ask questions first so hopefully we can help break that vicious cycle of ignorance.

This topic has been discussed a billion times and they need to make one a sticky.
First off GM has discontinued the LT4 Intake. So no more LT4 conversion kit without buying used manifold.
The main point is yes the parts are good, and they make good power, but you can spend a lot less elsewhere (ie Loyd Elliot (sp)) and get a lot more power.

LT1 ported intake ends up being better than LT4 unported intake (matches up with 195cc runners versus 190cc LT1 runners).....
LT4 heads are 195cc versions of stock LT1 heads with slightly bigger valves... any stage II LT1 heads will KILL a set of stock LT4 heads.. combine that with a good cam that is not a ***** small cam like the LT4 hot cam and you can make much better useable power and still be smog legal.... I don't think you are thinking about porting a set of LT4 heads and then slapping them on so I say stick to the LT1 **** and have them worked. easily more power in the long run for the same or less cash....

So were else can i go to get a lot more power for cheaper... i just need to get the best bang for the buck..
Is there better heads and cams out there for a stock displacement motor if so were can i get em

I will add Advanced Induction lingenfelter.com cmotorsports.com and there are a few along the right side of your screen in the sponsor list as well.
Gizmo remeber you are looking at this from an as cast standpoint, most of us are just playing with street cars so porting is allowed for us. OutlawZ covered things pretty well.

Wow another newbie thread with a bunch of newbies responding further spreading the ignorance. Ever heard of the "search button"???
Those above that actually take the time every day to set these people straight deserve some credit. (96capricemgr and OutlawZ )

Gizmo is knowledgable too he just looks at this from a class racing point of view, limiting him to unported. I will say LT4s as cast are better than as cast LT1s and have more ultimate potential BUT ported LT1s can make gobs of power even on strokers. On the b-body boards there are a fair number of guys that swear you need the larger port volume of ported LT4s or AFRs for a stroker and no amount of track and dyno results from LT1 casting topped strokers will convince them otherwise. They like to spread the lobes too so you have AFR'd 396s with cams over 230/240 and barely topping 400rwhp and defend their package even after the next guy makes as much powetr with ported LT1 castings on a stock bottom.
I am fixing to build a motor to run by the Super Stock rules on this forum. As you know any cylinder head modifications are legal. I will skip the LT1 castings, even though I feel that they would be good enough to run with the LS1's that are currently running the class. The LT4's just have way more potential (and I have a couple of sets collecting dust!).
It's no secret that I am a regular reader on this forum. One thing worth noting is that the LT1 guys are building way tamer cars than the LS1 guys. Matching modification to modification things would get a lot closer. I have been to a couple of the shoot-outs and the fast LS1 cars are all closer to race cars than street cars. I know of a few people with really strong LT1 cars, but that is just not the norm. That's why I want to run an LT4 against the "Big Dogs". Maybe it will be fun?

I think some of the reason we stay tamer is because we have the 7200rpm hard limit in our pcm, they can rev higher than that can't they? Plus all the magazines and such have written off the LT1 as soon as the LS1 came out, a lot of people get their start in modding from magazines even though they are horrible. Myself included. Had I been looking to buy a "performance car" back then the magazines likely would have led me to the LS1. I was looking for a god comfortable RWD V8 daily driver and just stumbled apon the LT1 in the process. Actually my car came with an L99 but the LT1 was a direct swap since it was an option.
I think that you are right. Most of the negative information about the LT1 is unfounded.
The PCM is a big difference, but not as much of a factor for big cube engines. I know of a couple of 383's that run low tens with the factory PCM (Ed Wright and Rick Ayber). For really good small cube motors and serious big cube motors an aftermarket system is a must. There are a lot more benefits to an aftermarket set-up than extra RPM. Even the LS1 crowd are starting to figure that one out! The Mustang racers faced the same issues in the past and fixed them with aftermarket systems.
The LS1 heads are better from the factory. But, that gap can be closed with all of the aftermarket parts/modifications that are available.
I don't think that there is any real advantage to the LS1 short block. If anything I like the bigger bore of the LT1.
The LT1/LT4 intakes are pretty good. I like the look of the new Edelbrock intakes. I think that they will run cooler and gain a little HP. The next step would be a sheet metal intake which will give good gains.
I should have my current Stocker project finished by the end of April. It is in the process of getting the underside painted. The motor and transmission are ready. Once the Stocker hits the track I will pull "Gump" out and take some before pictures. I will find a way to document the whole build up on here.

I know aftermarket injection offers more than just rpm benifits. To me though I want a street car first. I have a big set of upgrades in the works on my car but even after this I plan to drive it all the way to the east coast for some racing and visit family. Later I might push it down into the 11s on spray but never want to put a bar in it since they can be dangerous in a street accident.
Funny you should mention Rick and Ed I have emailed back and forth with both of them and know they can both teach us a lot. I find it interesting just how close their times are even given the LT1 vs. LT4 castings and Rick's higher DA, would love a more indepth comparison of both cars. I know they have the same tuner(Ed) and tranny builder(ProBuilt which is what I have) and both run solid rollers.
