Personally I think porting heads is one of the last things you should do, plus on these aluminum heads its a real pain, because one wrong move and boom you just trashed your heads. If you have already done alot to your car, then maybe you should, you can buy the tools from summit or off of ebay. Use either a drill or a grinder.

Usually mild porting of the heads increases the cfm by a good 100 to 150. Dont know what you are running so I cant guess. Get a Desktop dyno and plug in your stuff and see if porting the heads would make a big difference.
I ported the heads on my 68 Firebird, and OH MY GOD. what a huge difference. they flowed way better.

Here is stock flow
Valve sizes: 2.11/1.77
Intake port volume 162cc
Exhaust port volume 150cc

Intake Flow(cfm) Exhaust Flow (cfm)
.100 73 .100 41
.200 152 .200 100
.300 198 .300 136
.400 204 .400 166
.500 205 .500 185
.600 205 .600 194

Here is after porting
Intake Flow (cfm) Exhaust Flow (cfm)
.100 75 .100 55
.200 149 .200 100
.300 200 .300 150
.400 233 .400 185
.500 239 .500 206
.600 242 .600 220

Head porting can be a good mod if you already have a cam or do one at the same time, you have a HOT cam so that is taken care of but you could take the oportunity to change that too if you like. Aluminum is fine for porting and I believe actually EASIER to repair should you slip and hit water or something.

LT1 heads can flow a whole lot more on the intake side after porting with several companies topping 270cfm.

I agree with 96capricemgr, my LT1 heads flow a little more than 275 on the intake side. Hopefully I will complete my install this week.

I am not saying not to port the heads, just its better to perform other mods first, like 96caprice said about the bigger cam, or a better intake or headers, then port the heads and you will really be able to take advantage of the ported heads.

The cam is the first choke, the heads are pretty good in stock form but since airflow is THE key to making HP improving them is a manditory step in making any serious power.

porting your heads would be pretty cool and be able to tell a difference... but i could think of alot more stuff i would rather do then waste it on head work. Stock lt1 heads flow really well!
