Stepping Down?
Stepping Down? I hate to have to sell my LS1, but due to college funds it has got to go. With it off my hands, I figure I should start planning out my next project so by the time I get out of college I should have all the kinks worked out. So my questions is, I wish I could keep my LS1 but I dont think I could afford it right out of school. I do want to get some type of force induction setup with everything else supporting that. So I was looking at the LT1 vette, 90's and such. So would this idea be worth following after keeping in mind it would be something I would like to expand off from when ever possible, or should I keep the mindset of the LS1. I am just not very knowledgeable on anything with the LT1 so I figured I would stop in here and get everyones opinions. Thanks.

The 84 vettes still used cross-fire injection (L83). TPI was not introduced until 1985 (L98). Depending on the year, LT1 corvettes can cost as much as an LS1 F-car. They are great cars and the only thing I miss over my camaro is the back seats. -Paul

Dont get the vette find you slelf a nice Z28 or a SS to your liking, Lt1s arent slow at all. Most LS1 owners know nothing about them, now you want to call somthing slow the L98 TPI is dog slow compared to a LT1 or LS1.

The L98 was a decent motor for it's time. It'll keep up with an LT1 until the 1/8th mile but then the LT1 will pass it like it's standing still. I speak from personal experience, over and over again. It mostly suffers from the horrible injection system. The 17" long runners give it great torque down low but it runs out of steam around 4000 rpm. They can E.T. well but never trap good at all.
They're good street induction systems when built properly, but you'll never really have a 1/4 mile screamer or a top end runner. Good mpg too when tuned properly.
I wouldn't mind having a good condition late 80's IROC L98 car, as long as it had a 5-speed behind it. Along with worked heads, ported base/plenum and a cam to match it all, that could be fun

Thanks for the info, now before I continue let me state this. I am pretty much fully an LS1 guy, and by any of the following statements I am not in anyway trying to offend or insult and other type of engine/vehicle/driver. Merely take it as just me being an ignorant un-educated enthusiast wishing to learn and expand his horizon, with that said...
I have been poking around trying to figure out more info on what I should buy. While doing so I have noted some of your guy's quarter mile times. Now not to single out anyone or pick on anyone but just as it is visible to everyone else in this thread, here is one I pulled from a sig: "1992 Corvette M6 LT1, 14.20 @100 (2700 feet)" Now I am not sure if that is stock or modded, but my Z28 LS1 was able to pull a 13.8 at 5220ft with only a LID for the inake. I know I should expect the LS1 to be faster stock to stock compared to LT1 Z28s/SS and TAs, but the vette I figured would hold its own as stated before because of the weight ratio. So was I just lucky and got better grip perhaps or maybe the LS1 is stronger? I am not really to concerned about which is the better powerhouse out of the factory, but more on which will deal me the ponies in the longer run with the forced induction setup without burning a hole through the wallet. Also, another ignorant question, are the LT1s as reliable as the LS1s?

As far as LT1 vettes vs. LS1 F-bodies, its a close race. I raced a 99 black WS6 that pulled me by half a car length by 90 mph. The ones I've seen at the track are within a few tenths give or take of the LT1 vettes.
My $.02 ... I wouldnt say you are stepping down, rather across to a different technological time period. You could walk all the way back into an 85 Iroc and really, you are just playing with what was hot at the time. To all the LS1 guys...your time too shall pass as top dog, as it did for the LT1 guys. Just the way it is. I think a person might as well get a car they like, keep it, mod it, and dont fall victim to wanting the "new" stuff. For a while I was pushing the $30,000 rides, and now I am just as happy with my $7,000 one. Just gives me more breathing room in my wallet. 
the ONLY reason i would like to have a LS1 car is because my car is a rattle trap from hell.. lots of squeaks and this horrid popping noise. THat is my only complaint (and this is NOT normal.. the popping should not be there).... With a ls1 i could have a car that hasn't been beat on as long...
