Can't read codes any ideas?
car is 97 trans am
The plug that is under the dash that you use the scan tool on. It does not seem to be sending any signal. Any ideas?
Someone installed aftermarket radio and some stupid under dash lights if that makes a difference.

OBD 2 in a 1997 trans am.
yes the check engine light is on.
tha thing is I ran it through a scan tool myself and came up with no readings, So I took it to a friend who runs a mechanic repair shop, he had his scan tool - punched in the information (97, trans am, manual trans, etc) and his didn't come up with a reading either. What he thought was that it wasn't sending a signal out the plug.

z28fan..check the fuse that says "cig lighter"...the port where the handheld scan tool runs off the same fuse....my 97 T/A had a blown fuse and the scan tool would not read it.
Good luck
