Default throttle body question

i hear that people are plugging off the air port from the throttle body, that goes to the valve cover and just installing a breather cap on the valve cover.
if this is correct does the car run good with it plugged off.

It's not correct and there is no need for it. All you are doing is creating a small vacuum leak through the breather. If your worried about the small amount of oil entering the TB and intake from the hose, install an in line filter instead

And? This is the single worst saying that has ever been used. It doesn't matter that you have done it, the point is that it's not the correct thing to do, nor does it need to be done.

The PCV system is totaly closed. When you "vent" the valve cover, what you are actually doing is opening the system. It makes a vacuum leak. Intentionally making a vacuum leak for any reason is not a good idea.

Again the point is that there is no good reason to do it. It's not going to help performance, it's actually a vacuum leak, and it's not going to help anything. The only reason to do it is to eliminate teh small amount of oil tat gets pulled through from the valve cover. And if thats really a big concern, get an in line filter.

The PCV system should be operational, if you do this it will kill it and it will no longer pull the fumes and condensation from the system.

How will it cause the PCV system to not operate?

HBH-
I am sure you know where the PCV Valve and all that stuff is.. He said that he was plugging the Throttle Body, which is where the Vacuum connection is. If he does that, then he is good. Think about this also.. you are saying that putting a vent on the Valve Cover will affect the Vacuum, isn't the System called POSITIVE Crankcase Ventilation....
Any how can my sayin be the worst saying..lol
I re-designed the Steam Line coming off of the back of the Heads, and have had no problems with that, so if someone had asked me about it, I would say I have done it and had no problems..lol

Leave it on, when my motor was built they pluged off both pcv systems and put 2 filters on, my motor was overheating (not coolent temp but intake and valvecover temp and **** under the hood) it was getting so hot that the powtercoating on my intake started to come off and flake, soon as i put the pcv back on the overheating stoped. The system is there to yes pull crank case pressure but to cool the internals of the motor also odvously blow-by is very hot and thats what it's there to pull out. I dont think GM would put it there for no reason.

The problem with you was that both of them were messed with. Leave the one on the drivers side of the Intake alone, and you are good. You never want to mess with that little valve.

if you pull that tube on the pass side cover, and block off the TB port for it and install a breather, you are allowing Unmetered Air to enter into your car.

Some cars will be picky about it, some wont. My case was I had really messed up BLMs, and the idle was all messed up. I reinstalled the tube, BLMs normal and idle fixed.

Remember port is not necessarily a vacuum port. It's a 2way path as described in the FSM. it pulls nasty fumes from the VC (what gunks up the TB) and it also pushes air into the VC.

If you have problems with nasty stuff in your TB install an inline filter. There was a thread not too long ago (search for breather or something) about it. There was a blurb about the filter I use...

merv, im wondering how did you redesign the steam vent line?

The breather I run is Deutsch BF412 Breather available from autostore.

(check pass side VC) Looks factory. Forgive my dirty engine.

yes. it's more a seperator than a breather. remvoe the plastic elbow that goes into the VC grommet and that will connect to the hose without trimming.

buffman did you have to modify your valve cover or did it fit right in.

I have the same filter, it plugs right in with no modification. You will get significantly more oil from the driver side though. I would highly recommend a catch tank on the driver side, you will be surprised at how much oil you catch that would otherwise be flowing into your intake.

When I pulled the Heads, I looked at the way that it was setup from the factory, and I didn't like how it flowed. I took it all off, and got some brass fittings, and some high pressure line, and made a new setup. It bolted right in, and I am not having any problems with it. If anything, it is flowing better..I kept it the same size, but redesigned how it flowed.
